How beneficial are these two hooks? I'm sort of hoping that they will ultimately push my application far enough into the admissions pile. I highlighted the factors that come along with falling under these 2 categories and talked about my background of struggle along with being raised by a single mother who emigrated from Mexico.

My top choice is Claremont McKenna College.

People rely too much on their hooks. It will help, but don’t think you will be pushed to the front of the line. Claremont is a very competitive school.

It’ll help, but not enough to compensate for your low gpa and under 30 ACT score. I recommend you prayyyy.

Aww thanks, let’s overlook my EC’s and focus solely on my GPA (which showed an extreme upward trend) and test scores because i’m really expecting an adcon to look at a 29 and throw the application away instantly. I wouldn’t expect you to be too observant of my EC’s though, as you clearly don’t show much interest in them for yourself. I pity your lack of leadership.

Your post is the epitome of what’s wrong with the admissions process. I hope you get lost in the sea of anti-social Chinese students that populate UC Berkeley’s campus.

If anyone else wants to make a comment about my chances, that thread is located here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1597663-claremont-mckenna-chances.html

Hmm. Someone with consistent good grades vs someone who has an “upward trend.” I wonder which looks better in the end.

No need to be so hostile if you’re so certain your EC’s and background will save you. But just remember expectation vs reality.

I never said I was certain about anything. But in some cases, it could be argued that an upward trend is more beneficial than good grades throughout all four years. Which is more interesting to read about? The Chinese student with a consistent 3.9 or the Hispanic student who faced financial hardships/discrimination in a predominantly all-white public school and excelled after transferring to a much more rigorous preparatory institution?

I’m only boldly portraying the hostility that you so passively displayed in your previous post. Your passive remarks will fit you into a nice, quiet clique at a UC school. Enjoy!
