I am Native american... I have a tribe, i have an enrollment number, the whole shebang. I was just wondering how much will this help me getting into schools, I received a free app to Cornell, solely on the basis that I am NA. will being NA help me get into more prestigious colleges? I recently applied and I am hoping to get into the Umass Amherst Isenberg school of business and i have a 3.7/5 weighted GPA, and kind of freaking out until i get my letter, anything to put my mind at ease will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!!!

Maybe, maybe not. They will look at your whole application. It can certainly be a boost at places like Cornell. There are colleges that desire URM and especially Native Amer. more. At some colleges, they aren’t allowed by law to use affirmative action. Try to put your applications in where you want and were you think you would like to be and do well. Then relax and try not to freak out, it is just sort of useless, a bit of anxiety is normal.

For UMass, race is ‘considered’, see section C7 but I notice only about 30 Native Americans total. First generation to go to college is also ‘considered’ if that is in play. But you have a competitive gpa.

Being Native American will not automatically get you accepted, but as schools value diversity so much, it definitely will give you a leg up in the competition. You still need to have good stats, but it will help.

This is a semi-dated thread, but I couldn’t help but see you have Wyoming in your username in which I wanted to say power up! Another NDN from WY! Did you end up applying to Cornell, and have you received a decision from your schools yet?
