Being White in UCI

So i am white and mexican and i am wondering how much of a minority I will be at UCI.

I know there is a high % of asian students but im curious about how much.

HAHAHHA
here u go:
African American 2.2%
American Indian 0.4%
Asian/ Pacific Islander 52.2%
Chicano/Latino 12.9%
White 23.4%
Other 2.0%
Not stated 4.2%
International 2.7%

well good luck~ at my high school it’s like 98% Asian haha

haha thanks. and ya. im not racist in the slightest but i want to find my niche and im just being realistic. ive heard that the asian students stick together pretty closely and i want to make sure i have a group.

cheyenne1, don’t listen to the stereotypes. As an african american, who has lived in the oc most of my childhood (where my elementary, middle, and high schools where about 80% asian, 10 % white, 5% latino & like 1% black ) I’ve realized most people judge based on the person, not the skin color. I had and still don’t have problems finding a “group”. And supposedly I should be worse of.

If you get along with certain people, I doubt they wouldn’t want to be your friend just because you were a different race.

Don’t think in terms of groups, think more about individuals, and you’ll be fine, trust me.

I’m black, but I’m used to and have no problems with being the only black guy in the room.

You’ll probably be fine.

I’m white, I prefer white woman(blondes… drool) but you know what? I’ll take an asian with a good head on her shoulders over a dumb blonde any day. Regardless, I’ve been ina predominantly white area(1 mile south of irvine) my whole life, a little change might be nice for once, heck, I’ll be exotic… UCI, here I come.

I’m white too, Cheyenne, so you’re not the only one :). At least whitey’s are easy to pick out in a crowd!

Nearly all the whites go Greek. Sadly, a majority of the white guys are ******bags, especially the ones in fraternities. Its damn near impossible to join a Greek fraternity/sorority if you’re not white, which is why I pledged an Asian fraternity.

I guess I’ll have to agree that the whites go Greek, and that the majority of them are arrogant, rude, and boastful, but there are some whites in my dorm hall that are quite the opposite, and are actually great to be around with.

And I’ll have to agree that most Asians will stick together closely… but no doubt that you will not have trouble finding your niches, cliques, friendships, etc.

haha thats funny you mention Greek because im going to join a sorority.

so i wont be too out of place as a white girl there lol

i disagree with your statement that it’s hard to go greek if you aren’t white… check out photos on the uci greek life site; there are plenty of greeks who are other ethnicities

I’ve been rushing multiple fraternities both Greek and multi-cultural. Ya, there are other ethnicities in the Greek ones, but honestly, they’re hella white wash lol.

white washed in what way? very american?

Jersey Shore - white washed, its pretty bad sometimes. Skinny bastards trying to act all hard when they walk around. I always put them in their place by staring them down. I guess its just the times.

okay way to generalize!

theres always good and bad to every group…we dont need to get mean about it.

im white but i dont try and go around acting “hard” when i walk around

There’s a difference between acting American and being “white-washed.” Greek fraternities are based on American traditions and were originally formed by White men and eventually White women.

man, full latina here and well, we’ll see the ethnicity trends there are come Fall

colleges like to show diversity, even if its not really there…

but my (limited) interaction with the greek system has been predominately white people. although there are plenty of other elasticities and what not to where it shouldn’t be a problem.

woooooooooooooooooooooooooww! are you guys really having this discussion about race and ethnicity… it simply does not matter what the color of their skin is, how their eyes are shaped, if one clique has a prodominent ehtnicity in it, where they came from or lived, how “white-washed” or “americanized”(*** is this). thats pretty lame for you guys to limit yourselves from associating with certain groups of people based on race, ethnicity, or the lamest of lame stereotypes!! honestly??

^^^^

Not always true. Look at this exclusionary thread from the UCSB board.

An Asian floor? Unbelievable
