Being witty.

My college essay, so far, is pretty witty. I was wondering, how far is too far when you're writing as essay and using wit like I am?

I’d say wit is fine as long as it’s not offensive. Avoid being too harsh when talking about politics or controversial issues, because you might end up offending your admissions officers (not the best strategy). Also, what may seem to you like a witty commentary on a person (like a parent, sibling) may come across as insulting or condescending. So I recommend giving your essay to a lot of people to read, like your mom, English teacher etc., to see if they like it and get the humor.

A lot of times, what you think of as witty either comes across as stupid and unfunny or doesn’t come across at all. I’d have a few adults read it before sending anything in.

amen, olgita. When a person thinks they are being witty, they usually are not.
