Didnt get it:( so it goes. apparently the acceptance rate for belk semifinalists was like 2% this year. My sincere congratulations to whoever was qualified to receive this high honor.

My son got his letter today. With the drop in the stock market, I will have to work until I am 77. Now without the Belk Scholarship, I'll have to work until I am 91.

Don't forget! The Belk is not the only scholarship!! You can enter outside scholarships, too, if you don't get one here. Fastweb is a good place to start, I think!

still nothing for me. but i'm assuming that because i didn't receive a call it's a no. oh well. does anyone know when we find out about the other scholarships offered by davidson: the regular ones with no extra application and the special application ones?

hm. i feel like they'd tell you along with your decision to get you to come. but it's also possible that they don't tell you until you get there. idk

They would tell you before Decision Davidson because "Scholars Week" leads into it.

does anyone know when semifinalists find out if we made it to finalists?

caronant, I just got the call! Other finalists probably will fairly soon?

I'm ridiculously excited. So, someone said there were 22 semifinalists...does anyone know how many finalists there are?

And, anyone else get it? We'll probs see each other there!

yep, i got the call tonight! there are 12 finalists

okay it says if we aren't selected as winners, all finalists are automatically chamber scholars. what does that mean?

Nobody is really sure, I dont think. Congrats though guys! I was actually really surprised, my best friend, who applied to davidson really only because it was my favorite school, also applied for the belk scholarship. I had no idea until yesterday, but he was a semifinalist!! It was really surprising- he doesn't have near perfect anything (not to degrade him or anything) but he is a pretty inspiring dude and a great writer.

I think Chambers Scholars just means we get considered for very good scholarships (like 10-30k a year). Which, even if we don't get the Belk, is still pretty good.

I guess I'll meet you later this month!

I'm a little confused about this scholarship... if you get to be a semifinalist, are you automatically accepted into Davidson?

Yeah, you definitely are, I would think. That's kind of how it goes at all schools with these big scholarships -- if you get your school's nomination for the Morehead, you almost certainly will get into Chapel Hill. If you get your school's nomination for the Jefferson, you will almost certainly get into Virginia. That's usually how it works, because the admissions office sees the faith your school places on the point that you DESERVE to be there over all peers, since they can only make one nomination per class of students.

Woud it be presumputious to ask my college counselor to consider me for nomination for Belk?

Do distinguish between being nominated for the scholarship, and making semifinalist. 700 students were nominated for the Belk this year. Surely not all 700 get into Davidson. There's no reason you can't ask your GC to consider you; but even if you are nominated, that wouldn't guarantee admission, unless the nomination process were already quite competitive.

Ah! Yeah! This is a very, very good point.

Nominees do tend to get a second look, though. And yes, if you make it far in the competition, that's when the nominations do especially help you.
