Belk Scholar

My school recommended me for the Belk Scholarship, which looks pretty intensive and thorough. But other than what's on the pamphlet I got in the mail I don't know anything about it. What to do scholars who have won look like, in general? (but don't copy and paste from davidson.edu I've read that) I'm just trying to get a feel for any kind of merit money out there.

^^^ Did this pamphlet come to you because you'd been nominated, do you know?

my school also recommended me, but I know I have no chance whatsoever of getting it, I'm just worried about getting in. However, my GC told me that Belk Scholars obviously have some of the best stats in the applicant pool but are also highly highly involved in their community and have made a significant difference in some way. Many are leaders of statewide organizations or have leadership positions outside of school. They stressed activity outside of school and high integrity and character. Other than that, they mentioned it is a highly objective award and there is no sure-fire way to know if you are in the running. It is obviously highly competitive and you need to be toward the top of the class to be in the running

Yeah. I have heard some of the same things. I just wish they were specific.

And I got that pamphlet in the mail because I was nominated. But they also have it in the admissions office at Davidson. When I visited I saw it but didn't pick it up.

SO I am trying to decide whether or not to apply ED. What I was wondering is if you apply RD and have been nominated for the Belk Scholarship, if you make it to the phone interview semifinalist stage is that essentially an acceptance? Because I don't think I can bear waiting until April 1.

don't apply ed just because you want to be notified earlier.

Other than being extremely interested, wanting the higher acceptance rate, and not wanting to wait for 5 months, why would you apply ED?

just make sure you take everything into consideration, and don't get caught up too much in earlier notification and a higher acceptance rate.
if you get accepted, you will not be able to go anywhere else. are you ABSOLUTELY sure that davidson is where you want to be for four years? are finances a big deal in college? how will you finance ED? etcetc.
I'm just trying to help you out. It comes off that you want to apply ED because of the early notification and higher acceptance rate. I know I'd be applying ED if it weren't for finances. Just make sure you analyze the school pretty carefully and make sure it IS, almost without a doubt, THE place you want to go, and that you can do it.

Davidson definitely is the place. But like you (info from another thread) I got my financial aid estimate back with a lovely 0 on it. So because of that I have to apply RD. Which is why I asked about the Belk Scholarship as it pertains to RD. If I could potentially receive notification of acceptance in February that would qualm my fears about having to wait to April only to be denied.

I cannot believe both of you received need-based estimations of 0. I obviously have no idea of either of your financial situations, but my estimation came back to show that they would give us much more than we actually thought. It really starts to make you think how this financial aid thing works. And it also really sucks for both of you.

See the reason I got a 0 was because my dad and a group of other people bought a small company. And the company's income shows up on our tax return. So it shows some ridiculous number, NOWHERE near our real income. YIPPEE

regarding what the Belk Scholars look like, I got into Yale Princeton and Harvard but did not win the Belk last year (I was a finalist). Just about everyone who did not win the scholarship (or decide to go to Davidson anyway) went to an Ivy League school. That being said things like interviews and essays play a very large role so even if you feel that other people are more qualified it is still very possible to win with good interviews and essays.

I highly encourage you to apply for it. Its worth the work (and you can reuse the stuff from/on other applications).

So who actually applied for this and everything? I just got a little packet with stickers. A little late since everything is allready in lol.
anyway, I'm basically going to do a backflip if I get any merit $ from davidson haha

I applied and got those lovely stickers. And I would definitely agree with you about any merit $ money from Davidson. I'd probably be the happiest person alive.

I'll be the happiest person alive if I just get into Davidson!
