<p>Because the tests are hard. Like StPlayrXtreme said:</p>

<p>"I thought I got a C with a 72%, turned out I scored well above the mean of a 60% and was actually in a B+ to A- range."</p>

<p>In mosts tests the average is low and they set it up to bring the average person around the B level.</p>

<p>It doesn't sound as ridiculous as Harvard's grade inflating, but the Cornell grading system does sound beneficial in some places.</p>
