My son is considering Belmont because the commercial music program there seems to have what he wants. However as a non Christian he is wondering if he would be comfortable there.Their literature really stresses c
Christian lif on campus. Anyone out there know anything about this issue?

Steiny,
My son went there. He went there as a United Methodist and is now a Baptist living in the Nashville area. Being a Baptist school, there is significant Christian influence. I think you always have the possibility of over zealous students trying to "convert" non-Christians, but I would be surprised if that happened.

I am convinced that the vast, vast majority of students as well as the entire school staff, faculty and administration support and welcome cultural and religious diversity.

I think the commercial music program there is excellent. My son and daughter in law graduated in commercial music there and are very happy with what they are doing after graduation. Visit the school and let us know what you think.

When I went to visit the campus, they seemed to try to stress that they accept everyone and are trying to be more diverse.

Henrob how was the audition into the music program like? Is the school very competitive?

My son and daughter-in-law graduated two years ago, so their audition was several years ago. He is a violinist/jazz fiddler. They wanted him badly, and if you have talent instrumentally I don't think it is difficult to get in.

Commercial voice majors are a little different. That is by far their biggest group of music majors. But I believe if you have good musicianship and vocal skills, you can get accepted to the program without too much trouble. But there are many fine commercial singers, with a very large group of females, all wanting to be the next Trisha Yearwood, Jane Monheit, or someone like that. So it is very competitive to be in the best vocal ensembles.

But don't expect a large talent scholarship. Back then I was told our son got one of their biggest talent scholarship, but it was not a large % of the tuition.
