Belmont University

Someone on this website recommended i look at Belmont, and with some research it peaked my interest. I am interested in music performance, music production, and/or music business. Does Belmont live up to its reputation and is it well respected in the industry?

Cant help exactly with Belmont but know of someone who’s nephew went to Berklee, met a kid who suggested they move to Nashville and is now a very “in demand” musician making close to 6 figures. This only happened a couple of years ago too. So my guess is that music is alive and kicking in the backyard of this school and it is really worth taking a good look at.

I also read somewhere (a different student review site) - that a negative about Belmont was the the school culture was “too” focused on the performing arts students…maybe a negative for a liberal arts student, but not for a music student!

Heard lots of good things there, my teacher, and the librarian for my school has a cousin who is a music business professor there actually. I’m going to use him as a primary source in a paper i’m writing. but yeah it seems like a cool school and focuses on contemporary music and the business side of things. definitely respected I think, nt just very well known, definitely cool though. I was in nash this summer looking at the Blair school of music and stumbled upon Belmont, didn’t get to take a tour but the campus was nice

Belmont sits literally on the edge of Nashville’s music row: major recording labels are across the street. A friend graduated Belmont in the tech field, and has always found work he wants and enjoys. Nashville is a great city for music jobs, as well, whether classical, country, jazz or techie. I have friends in classical cello at Blair, and they always have jobs when wanted or needed.

I have an associate who is a phenomenal sound eng, who has a studio in our city and who also teaches sound at a regional university. Belmont is where he sends those rare, phenomenally talented students he encounters through internship or his classes. I think that speaks highly of the program.

My S is applying to Belmont for commericial music composition and arrangement. We visited in July and were extremely impressed! I think it does live up to its reputation, especially for the music business. Pretty much every student gets an internship with a music company. The school of music business also offers semesters in New York and LA. It’s a beautiful little campus, too. The buildings are very modern and the dorm rooms are huge. No coed dorms there.

The strength of the performance programs depends on the instrument. My understanding is that voice is extremely competitive, and the percussion faculty is among the best anywhere. My S was originally looking at commercial guitar performance and was very happy with that program too. Belmont and Berklee are the only schools in the East that offer contemporary guitar.

The school of music business at Belmont is separate from the school of music. You do not have to audition or even play an instrument to attend the school of music business. It’s more like a business school that just focuses on the music business. The school of music does allow you to take classes at the school of music business. Some students do end up transferring from one to the other.

Belmont also emphasizes experiential education in all of its programs. It owns a nightclub and two performance centers that are operated by students.

NYC - Check last year’s acceptance lists. There was a mom who’s son chose Belmont even after being accepted by schools like Indiana(Jacobs). You might want to PM her and see how it’s going.
