Beloit put out its annual "mindset" list-- of things its incoming freshman class is too young to have experienced. Ready to feel really old??! Read on... (scroll down to the calss of 2010 list) http://www.beloit.edu/~pubaff/mindset/
For example, they never knew Gilda Radner or Andy Gibb, they've had barcodes on everything they buy, Richard Daley has always been the mayor of Chicago, and minivans have always been in existence.
OK, where's my wheelchair and geritol???
Can anyone think of other things to add to the list that Beloit missed?

OMG! Andy Gibb is dead?! Say it ain't so. . .

Some of us are old enough to appreciate why the old times were not so bad:
For the class of 2010:

"Head shops" are illegal most places
HAIR is not an innovative Broadway play, but instead the subject infomercials on how to grow it
WOODSTOCK is a character in the Peanuts strip.
Levitating the Pentagon would be a terrorist threat
There has always been AIDS

Television stations have never concluded the broadcast day with the national anthem.

The first time my parents told me about this, I was completely shocked. What do you mean tv wasn't on all night back in the day??

You feel old, but we feel like little kids.

I've done or heard of a lot of that stuff.. but some of it like..

Smoking was permitted on airlines?

I've never mailed anything using a stamp. Ever. lol.

You didn't have little white holiday lights before?

I've eaten bad airline food! Really.

I've seen the national anthem stuff, but on like Sudan's TV channel. And I think Kuwait TV2, 3 and 4 had that like 8 years ago.

I don't get the olympics thing. "Professional athletes have always competed in the Olympics." Wha? Where else would they compete?

oh, and I find out Gilda Radner existed a few days ago. I watched a movie about her in my hotel room the other night. Seems like she was a really interesting woman.

Can you imagine a life with beepers instead of cellphones? Or without beepers?

Yeah, I remember that. Pagers? I remember when everyone had pagers before cells.

I'm class of '09, but several of these aren't true of me:

36.They have rarely mailed anything using a stamp.

I send letters all the time. This summer, I sent ~30 postcards, every one with a stamp.

Brides have always worn white for a first, second, or third wedding.

I disagree with this.

They never played the game of state license plates in the car.

They have always preferred going out in groups as opposed to dating.

both NOT true.

Sara Lee has always made underwear.

doesn't Sara Lee make...pound cake?

63. Television stations have never concluded the broadcast day with the national anthem.

They still do in Texas.;) That or the Blue Angels Air Force one.

o/~
Boy the way Glen Miller played....
o/~

an addendum to Gilda Radner
Saturday Night Live was a * comedy show* and it was funny!
Outside of bits like Natalie Raps
Whenever I manage to stay up that late ;)
it just isn't that funny anymore

Yep, #57. totally flummoxed me as well. Sara Lee....underwear?????

http://www.saralee.com/ourbrands/
yeah, apparently they make underwear! Obviously no one in either generation knows about it :)

Singing slightly out of key...

"Everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Sara Lee!"

(I never heard of underwear either.)

Well gee, I thought that professionals had always been banned from the Olympics. Those of us who have watched the figure skating since we were 5 have always been aware that Olympics are for amateurs only. Guess I'm not "in the know." (This is such a big issue for skaters 'cuz they can make so much $$ doing professional shows, & the money's tempting.)

I never heard of Sara Lee undies either.

Time to make a comment about what to eat for dessert tonight???!!

Yeah, I feel like having Sara Lee pound cake now. Except I'm putting myself on a strict diet. bleh.

I wish there was a vegan food store/restaurant in Kuwait.

I love the Beloit lists. We used to read them at the staff meeting before move in back in my Boston College days (when I was in student life). It was a little mental prep for working with our new students.

For some reason, this one really cracked me up:
34. They have always known that "In the criminal justice system the people have been represented by two separate yet equally important groups."
I guess in five years, the list will say that our new students don't remember a time when there weren't 3-5 versions of Law & Order and CSI on TV.

The music ones always get me...Michael Jackson is a bad and Ringo is sober. I'm sure they see Clapton as an older guy on MTV Unplugged. Wait...do they remember when MTV was ONLY music? They probably consider the music from back then to be "classic rock". :)
