Below 700 SAT math score, 5 on BC Calculus ?

I have never been that good at the SAT 1260/1840, but I have always been somewhat good at math. I made a 680 on the SAT math, but could never get the score any higher no matter how hard I tried (most likely careless errors). In my BC calculus class, most students had at least 2000+ SAT scores. Still, I had one of the highest test averages in the class. I made a 5 on the AP exam, and I was wondering if other CC members have had SAT scores inconsistent with AP exams.(probably not likely, this is CC)

I believe that learning Calculus AB or BC does not help much with SAT I Math (if at all). I heard SAT I Math is more of applying knowledge than Calculus is.

Well, I got a 700 on Math II, 710 on the math section of the SAT, and a 5 on Calculus (AB). In my opinion, the SAT tests different applications of knowledge than the AP exam, which is more knowledge-based. That’s really the main difference between the two: one examines reasoning abilities, while another tests knowledge of content.

It is harder to do well on the SAT Math Reasoning, because the curve on the AP Cal AB test and the AP Cal BC test (Like all AP Tests) are amazing, while for the SAT Math Reasoning , its not really math but tricks and reasoning, not to mention that it has a terrible curve.

^Yes, but in addition to the admittedly large curve difference between the SAT and AP Calculus (AB/BC) exams, the two exams test different areas of a student’s abilities.

^ That to.

Chem: 730 SAT II, 3 AP
Math: 700 SAT II, 5 on Calc AB

I’d say the chem was more of a discrepancy- I think I just got really lucky on the SAT because I truly had no idea what I was doing on the AP.

My scores are consistent, but I do agree that the tests assess fundamentally different (though related) things.

I can see what you guys are saying, but the SAT math is used by college admissions to reflect how someone is prepared for a college math class. If I can do well in a college level math class, but bad on the SAT math, it just doesn’t seem right to me.

Which colleges do this?

^
Isnt that what the SAT is supposed to test? How prepared a student is for college?

In general, but I don’t think that the SAT Math section is designed as a placement test or as an indicator of how well someone is prepared for any specific college math class.

The SAT is more designed to test whether you have the skillset that will allow you to succeed in college. Subject Tests and AP tests are designed to specifically test what you have learned in high school. There is, of course, some overlap.

^
I never said that it was used as a placement test. I was just trying to make a point that even though someone can not do spectacular on the SAT, they can still be prepared to handle college level work.

Well, of course. But someone with a high score is on average better prepared than someone with a lower score.

^
I can agree with that. I feel like someone with 2000+ is better prepared then someone in the 1500s. I think there is a point though where it doesn’t matter though.
