below average gpa transfer

Hi everyone!

I am attending University of California - Riverside ATM, going on to my second year. Currently I have 84 quarter units (which is 6 units under the 90 mark for 2 years). My current GPA is 3.292, and hopefully by the end of my 2nd year i will have 3.65. I am also a business major.

Does Haas @ Berkeley and Wharton @ UPenn sound too far fetched?

What are my chances with Stern @ NYU?

Is it worth it to apply 1 semester later just to bring my GPA past 3.7?

Best Regards,

Wharton would be a dream even with a 4.0, Stern is unlikely and Berkley possible but definitely not a sure thing.

find something that sets you apart whether it be EC's, work experience etc. and make sure you let the Adcoms know about it.

I am sorry for being blunt however at your current GPA Haas and Wharton are in all reality is completely impossible. At NYU You might raise your chances at getting accepted around the same probability of hitting the lottery. If you raise your GPA to 3.7 Haas and Wharton are still impossible and maybe NYU might still be around lottery chances. If The second post gave you hope at Haas there really is no chance, ruffly 80 students get accepted each year and the transfer rate is 8%. The average GPA of people that are accepted is 3.9+ and have completed the specific class prerequsites that you need to get into Haas which not only requires major prereques but also specific GE requirements. The reason you have a real disadvantage at Haas is due to the fact that Berkeley gives priority to California Community College students and only a very select few UC students transfer to Haas and these students tend to have stellar GPA's and extracurricular's. I am sorry if I broke your heart just work hard at riverside and focus on getting into a good MBA program. Good luck with everything!

no offense bro, you don't stand a chance...in california i've heard that once your at a university, your there to stay unless you have a very good reason for transferring...the community college students from california with solid gpa's who fulfill the igetc requirements have a much better shot then you at berkeley

what about attending a cc for my 2nd year? will there be a point to that?

possibly man, but i wouldnt count on stuff....post ur transcript and classes and grades and ill tell u what would be best for ya

if ucr were to be a nicer campus, i would stay and just apply for MBA after internship/work, but i REALLY HATE it there. I don't think i can stay for another year there, that is why i'm thinking about transferring. I really messed up the first quarter (and perhaps the third)

whats ur major? and actual gpa with those classes right there?

pre-business (we dont' get into bsad until 90 units)

3.292 is what the system calculated...

that transcript actually doesnt look as bad as i figured it would...id say you need to take foreign language if its required, 2 or 3 semesters whatever is required before you transfer....i also think you should take the minimum math class whether it be intermediate algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, statistics, or calculus I...i would also take us history 1 and 2...i would also take critical thinking and im pretty sure that is required...i would take a public speaking class, and an ethics class in philosophy...id also take an introductory sociology and psychology class...if u can get a's in all of those u will probably get in...now its up to u how bad u want it.

jay:

i got out of math requirements with my calculus ap scores
i tested out of foreign language (chinese)
i took ethnic studies, philosophy already
i took psychology at cc
i took stats at cc
i took us history through cc
plus ap bio credits and others, i transfered in with 35 quarter units. are you suggesting that i should take those classes over for a grade?

critical thinking and public speaking? interesting.

i know critical thinking is required for california schools because i remember reading the igetc when i was thinking about going there...if you already have those out of the way, then i would not take them...i would start knocking out introductory classes that you can get a's in and bring your gpa up...introduction to anthropology, psychology, sociology, etc...whatever you can take that is transferrable to bring your gpa up do it...otherwise your chances are slim with your gpa.

there's not much i can take... Next quarter i'm planning to take english 1c, micro and macro econ theory (2 classes), and then history 15. After that I'll be officially in bsad major and completed all GEs.

well then work your ass off and try to get a 4.0 in your remaining coursework, and then see if you can get in...if not man at least you knew you gave it your best.

Yeah dude, that's one thing I've come to realize over the past year I've been trying to transfer. Do your very best, as in get the highest grades, internships, cultivate a relationship with a few professors, whatever you have to do.

I've done everything, I think, to the best of my ability so that when I do apply for transfer admissions next year, even if I don't get into my top, or even second choice, I can say that there was nothing else I could have done and I think that will be enough for me.

yea man, so dont worry about it if you don't get in...your grades are that much better for grad school, then you can go there.

i appreciate for the replies. i guess i'm pretty desperate to get out of riverside, but doesn't the ungrad school count for something? like a 3.8 from ucr will be a lot weaker than a 3.8 from cal.

Stop sounding so depressing dude...a 3.8 is a 3.8 regardless. Besides, a MBA is way more important in business than an undergrad business degree. I say you work hard in UCR and get your 3.8 then apply to top MBA programmes and the rest is history :)
