I do not watch this show regularly. It was talked about on some of my social media sites. So I watched it last night. On Peacock. Season 2 episode 7.
Shows an attempted sexual assault and the aftermath. In fact the episode showed a man who climbed into a passed out women’s bunk naked and a woman who was over aggressive with a man. Production had to intervene in both cases.
Did anyone watch this? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I thought it was a pretty powerful hour of television. Triggering, yes. But if you have a young person in your house, I think it was important to watch. And learn from.
Not exactly like this, but Survivor had an issue within the last 5 years I believe where a contestant had to be removed from the game because of the complaints of young women contestants. He was an older man who was warned about inappropriate comments and I guess he would not stop.
Below Deck is my guilty summer show. We’ve seen all the seasons and Monday’s episode is the first I can remember where the producers had to intervene, let alone twice. Definitely teachable moments!
SPOILER BELOW
I was pleased that that they also intervened in the second situation and that the captain fired both. The stew’s comments were shocking to me.
I agree that I was shocked by the stews comments. It felt so off. And very inappropriate.
I was so impressed by the response of the captain and the head steward. It really felt like they had training and did the correct thing. They were very supportive of the young women. I felt awful that she was afraid that she was too flirty. It was heartbreaking all around. For the young woman. And the young man who had the aggressive woman who’s attention he did not want.
I watch this. There have been very concerning episodes in the past including a bosun sleeping with a direct report, a deckhand that was fired on Below Deck Adventure for harassing a stew, and a stew that may have forced herself on the first mate. Lots of other stuff that would get you fired in a corporate setting happens too. This was the first time I saw production prevent SA.
I’ve watched several versions of the Below Deck franchise. It seems like they all are breeding grounds for dangerous toxic behavior. I’m shocked that Bravo, or whoever is in charge, has allowed the franchise to continue. Down Under is the first time I’ve seen producers intervene but there have definitely been scenarios on other seasons where production should have intervened.
I’ve actually been impressed with how the show handles unfortunate incidents, cocaine residue, charter cancelled, guests fighting among themselves, a stew with meds with no prescription- zero tolerance. Having watched literally every episode, there is a huge code of conduct. One woman after drinking too much dove off the boat and was taken back to land. It’s really the only reality show I watch besides amazing race and cooking shows.
Yes - they handle issues with the guests immediately, but some of the conduct amongst the crew has been concerning, to say the least. The racist guy on the “explorer” series who was bullying the black crew member…production kept filming. After he finally got kicked off, a lot of stuff came out about the kind of person he really was. It’s hard to believe that Bravo couldn’t have known about him beforehand. Last season on sailing yacht with Gary constantly grabbing and kissing (and groping) Daisy (who was dating someone else on board).
I get it - it’s good for TV but these increasingly concerning incidents combined with the binge drinking by the crew, are making the series tough to watch. I am so glad production finally intervened in this case!
I also watched, thought they handled it well. I thought the creeper’s reaction was off and wondered if he had done something similar in the past.
I generally enjoy the show very much, beautiful people in beautiful places generally having fun. I wouldn’t want the show to go away but I wish this very unacceptable event hadn’t happened, it’s not why I watch. But that’s the real in reality tv, they can’t just sweep it under the rug.
