What is next? Just like you said, the entire immediate family should step up and help. It will require some sacrifice of course, maybe different work shifts to save on day car, maybe two jobs. But they have to take care of that baby, not the government.

She might not have thought explicitly about all these programs, but I think her upbringing has something to do with her not thinking through this decision to have a baby, while not being self-sufficient.

I also don’t see success for a society that has a large underclass. We just completely disagree on the solution. While you think government programs make it possible for poor to move up economic ladder, I think those programs breed complacency and increasing dependence on them.

Anyway, to me 2 things are clear.

it’s still hard for a family to live on such a low income

Yes, it’s hard. So what?*

The point is that verification might wonder if there isn’t money under the table or something else going on. It’s one thing when income is low for a year because the parents have been laid off, it’s another when there’s a history of a very, very low income. It will look suspicious.

There was a student who posted a year or so ago who was having to verify that his family was really living on $10k per year…because it was rather unbelievable…they owned a home worth $300k, they weren’t living on a farm or anything to get food from. I don’t know what the result was, but it was hard to believe that they could pay property taxes, utilities, phone, food, etc, on such little income.

My total family income every year is $1572. I

that suggests that the low income isn’t just because of an “off year.” The above suggests that this in what the family routinely earns…this is about $30 a week!
