I have been told by multiple people that MIT isn't extremely strict with regards the word limit on the essays. I was wondering whether the same applies to the activity descriptions. For example, if I am at 45-50 words on each of the activity descriptions, is it okay? The wizard says to revise it to 40 words, but gives me the option of saving it. Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

I don't think they will care if you go over a little. Since they give you such a limited space, preview the file in PDF... does the the field show up entirely? If it does, then it probably doesn't matter, BUT I would email MIT admissions. They have such a friendly admissions office.

I don't think Ben (or anyone on the adcom) has much free time right now. You'd probably get beter results by e-mailing him (benjones@mit.edu) than waiting until he has free time to check the boards.

Make sure the PDF preview looks okay. From what I can tell, it's WYSIWYG.

Those limits are there for a reason. Its shows you can follow directions - although not necessarily important for MIT folks ;)

Also, it puts all the applicants on equal paperwork footing. You really don't want your application to stand out in this way.

One more....MIT gives you a couple optional, 500-word limit sections to use for anything you feel needs to be included to give them a better picture of you. So anything you feel is important enough to not leave out...put it there.

Shoot. My essays are about twice the word limit :(. I've been trying adamantly to cut them down, but they will end up being incoherent if I do.

"The MIT Admissions web site will be offline until approximately 10.00AM EST on Saturday, 10/29/2005."

Asiaknight: print, read, and then retype it completely. Or repeat. That's helped me ^_^

Also, for the activities descriptions, the font gets progressively smaller as you approach 40 words. Look in the preview. All my shorter descriptions are in big text, and the longer ones are teeny-tiny.

zking: make that 3p.m. I bet everyone went "Hey, let's all go to the website at 10p.m!"

40-50 words over is no problem. But an essay that is twice as long as the posted limit should probably be edited down. Just my 2 cents. :-)
