I didn’t submit my SAT scores (2270) by the December deadline so I don’t qualify for the $2500 NM scholarship. I went through the scholarships that the other 2/3 of merit scholars receive, and they don’t apply to me. Is there any benefit to submitting my scores now, in hopes of becoming a finalist?
If you missed the deadline you are not a finalist. Many schools award guaranteed merit aid to NMF’s: Fordham, USC, Northeastern, BU to name a few.
@TomSrOfBoston No…? If I submit my report by the end of January, I can still be considered for finalist standing, just not for the $2500 scholarship, unless the letter I received is incorrect.
OK, as long as you can become an NMFinalist you would be eligible.
If NMSC told you that you can submit your score this late and still qualify, then that is their prerogative and I’d recommend you submit the score ASAP. You may not be eligible for the $2500 award, but if any of the schools that offer large school-sponsored awards to Finalists (UKy, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc.) are of interest to you the “benefit” can be well in excess of $100K.
Other than the cost of submitting your score to NSMC…what do you have to lose? Even if you’re shooting for schools that don’t offer anything to NMFs, it certainly couldn’t hurt to have a guaranteed full-ride or near full-ride scholarship safety school in your hip pocket. Just one man’s opinion.
I agree with previous post ^^. Send them in.
Wondering why the scores are allowed to be submitted late this year. Did the letter mention why? Usually it’s by 12/31. Someone on another thread mentioned weather issues potentially delaying the December SAT’s. The “dreaded letters” (i.e. the letters sent to those who didn’t advance to finalist) went out late as well (in comparison to other years).
I assume you’re talking about this list: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/649276-nmf-scholarships-an-updated-compilation-p1.html
I haven’t really taken a look at those schools. I’d be out of of state for all the public universities.
Is that the only other benefit form becoming a NMF? I haven’t applied to any of the schools on that list, so it’s kind of a moot point. I might send in my scores either way, but I’d like to know if becoming a NMF entails any other benefit.
There are other schools not on that list. You should check the extensive list of schools that came with your NMSF materials.
What schools did you apply to?
@JBStillFlying I’ve applied to UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, Caltech, Cornell, UR, Stony Brook, CMU, and MIT. I don’t believe these are on the list, but I could be mistaken.
Probably most of those aren’t. I doubt being an NMF could hurt anything, so if you can still send the scores in, why not do so? For some people, NMF is very important because they go for the large scholarships (like full rides) offered at those schools. I recognize that calling those options “only” other benefits is probably just because you’re not familiar with the program, but please don’t trivialize it - it’s a big deal for many people.
It’s a nice thing to put on your resume for bragging rights, if nothing else.
@albert69 I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude. Thanks for the info. I’ll probably send my scores in case it brings me scholarship money in some form.

Doesn’t really matter for many of the OOS publics that give NMF awards. Many of the awards cover all of tuition, even OOS rates.
