Benefits of Athletics for Admissions

I am wondering how much swimming will benefit me in my college admissions. I am planning on applying to several Ivy League schools, as well as the Air Force Academy, Stanford, and USC. For anyone here who is a swimmer, my top times are as follows :

100 breast: 59.1
200 breast: 2:09.9
50 free: 21.65 (converted from LC)
200 IM: 2:00.8

My long course 100M breast is also very close to a Junior Nationals Cut.

In my school, I am in the top 10, I have a 4.56 weighted/ 3.81 unweighted GPA, and 33 ACT.
My main question is, even though my academic performance is not particularly stellar, what is the probability that swimming will give me the extra boost in order to get into those top Universities?

If you are female, those times will be a huge benefit in college admissions.

Male, not so much.

Don’t know much, but [College Swimming Recruiting](http://www.icacsports.com/college-swimming-recruiting/)

^I wonder where that site got some of its times from–57.0 for 100 breast? That’s completely disproportionate to the other times. Under 57 is nearly a US Open Cut, while a 21.8 on a 50 free doesn’t even come close to Junior nationals.

Here’s a link to the men’s Ivy championship meet results:

Pretty fast, and I’m guessing Stanford and USC are faster.

I know this isn’t really the same because you are talking about ivies… But I was admitted to Seattle university from Pepperdine university as a sophomore starting next fall. I wasn’t really expecting to get in anywhere since I had a 2.4 gpa from first semester and a 3.3 in high school. The coach definitely helped with admissions by writing a letter and talking to them. He also told me to contact a certain admissions counselor who helped me write an extra essay that definitely helped me get it in. I know this isn’t really the same because you are looking to get into some top schools but I hope this helps a little!

If you are a junior, you need to go a bit faster (57 or lower) for your 100 breast to get some serious looks from most Ivies. Try to get your junior nat cut in 1breast as soon as you can. Lots of Ivy coaches will be at the Indy meet in August. You have three months plus lots summer doubles. It can be done. They also are interested in prospects who can contribute to at least two events so you need to see what’s your second event that is closer to the Ivy championship top 16 times (8 is better). Continue to show your interest in lower Ivies like Dartmouth, Brown, and Cornel. I do know someone who had a 58 in 1breast got a lift into Dartmouth (excellent student though). You can probably cross out Stanford and USC for admission boost with your times (and most likely Princeton and Harvard too, though you might be able to get into USC yourself with good EC & test scores).

In a nutshell, it’s possible to get some interest if you work hard the next three months and express your strong interest to swim for some of the targeted programs that are less competitive in the league.
