Benjamin Franklin Scholars.. anyone know anything?

Hey guys,

I got something in the mail today designating me a “Ben Franklin Scholar.” Cool!

Apparently it’s essentially an honors program within UPenn, though I’m a little hazy about what it exactly entails. Does anyone know anything about BFS that they could share? Is anyone else here a BFS?

Thanks!

hey raven i dont have an answer for you, but i've got a question :E

did you get this "BFS" thing separately from your admission decision, or was it there in you're acceptance package.

thanks.

Good job :)

i can only impart a little bit, but.. oh actually look it up on the penn website. it can tell you far more than i can. you can do research and stuff, pretty much

ok... no it doesn't give aid or anything of that matter... it basically is given to the top 5% of applicants and puts them into a special pool... they have priorities for classes, housing arrangements? not too sure on that... and basically if you can maintain a 3.4 gpa or something* actually fairly difficult as to waht i know... you graduate cum laude... in addition certain classes are open only to bfs students so you get a wider range of choices... all in all pretty worthless, but still pretty cool at the same time

i got that too today. hrm. princeton or penn...princeton or penn...I CANT DECIDE

Thanks for the info guys.. the BFS website is a bit vague. a-bomb, the package came today, seperate from my admittance package.

That is pretty cool

Hey raven,

that does sound reall cool... don't know if it's worthless... I hear the BFS seminars are really good with the best of Penn's faculty and classes are usually quite small so it's nice... also, come on, it's really nice to have special treatment... and to be considered as top choice of the class, no?
Congrats!

Hey Raven....it is all good.

Woo hoo! I just got the packet of information today for the program. I'm even more excited about Penn now!
Raven001-Are you going to the day on campus on April 18th? Since they want us to go without our parents, are we supposed to get a hotel room?

huh... april 18... i'll see you guys there, altho i'm not an 09er... i have to go to penn that day to do something :) hopefully i'll be an 010er

anythign that says "scholar" is cooool in my opinion..

vagelos scholar... haha

I was invited to be in this also. i dont know if it is woth flying to philly from houston for 3 days though. online, the information sucks. i read everything on the penn website about it and i still have almost no idea what it is or if it is worth being in. any information about the program from you guys would be very appreciated.

713kevin... it's basically what i said above, it's not worthless as i said tho... it actually helps a lot in class choice and even housing sometimes

I got the same letter. Seems like there's no loss in joining, EXCEPT if those seminars can't be used to fill the general requirements. If they can be, than no problem, doesn't matter if they have seminars in your area or not.
I'll ask when i visit on the 15th.

they can not only be used to fill general requirements, but are often seminars which allow you to bypass certain classes... i.e. do the labs but not the lectures kind of thing... wow i know a lot for someone who doesn't even go there :)

Question about BFS and the Joseph Wharton Scolars: do they give you MORE classes or DIFFERENT classes?

how would being in it help with housing?
Also, if i come up next weekend to check BFS and do the penn previews thing, is there a way i could stay on campus and not get a hotel room. i was plannin on comming up by myself.
