Hey guys.
I received a letter in the mail recently informing me that I have been selected as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar. Evidently, there are 100 scholars chosen from each college at Penn.
First of all, I was a recruited athlete and “borderline” applicant. How on earth did I get this?

Also, is it a big deal, or are they just trying to get me to come there?

There have been other threads about this, and I'm pretty sure it's like an honors program at UPenn. I think you get to take honors classes and get priority selection for classes. Thats pretty impressive to get that, nice job

Do a search for bf scholars to find the other threads

what is the significance? Is it worth rethinking my college plans? (btw, i had planned on going somewhere else). It just kind of made me stop and think. Should I think more about it?

I'm not sure about getting priority for classes (i'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying that I'm not sure). However, it is a very nice award to get.

They sent a letter to my college counselor about it because they knew I wanted to do a dual degree (being a BFS and dual degree is very hard if not impossible) so they wanted to give me the heads up on how difficult it was going to be and that they advise everyone not to do it if they still want to do the dual degree. So, I figured, I could always apply to be a JWS of a BFS depending on the dual degree.

It's a respected thing to get. You graduate cum laude. But again, choose where you want to go based on the school because at the level you're at right now you honestly can't go wrong.

I called the ARCH today. they said there is no priority scheduling but you get priority for BFS seminars. There is no housing priority. The classes count toward your general requirements. About 5% of accepted freshman are asked to be a BFS.
