berkeley admission terminology`

what do they mean when they uncapped gpa?

To calculate weighted GPA for UCs (UC GPA), you add an extra point for up to four weighted courses (8 semesters). This is the "cap." If you uncap it, you add an extra point for all weighted courses.

also, when they calculate the gpa, do they use all of the courses or do they only use the ones to satisfy the a-g requirements?

a-g, I think.

well, what if you took courses beyond the required a-g. do they calculate all or just the requirements?

No, a-g subjects only.

waait does berkley use uncapped gpa? why were u asking?

yeah, where/in what context did you see "uncapped GPA" used? I'm just curious

UCs give out stats for unweighted, UCGPA, and weighted. The third one is the "uncapped" weighted GPA. For example, Berkeley's average GPA -

UW: 3.8
UCGPA: 4.1
Weighted: 4.25

Something like that. I think they mostly look at your UCGPA with regards to admissions though.

ELC is also an uncapped calculation....

ooo..i never knew the 4.25 is uncapped??? where did u dind out capped UC Gpa of 4.1?
does l.a. do similar thing w/ unacpped UC gpa?

thank you

I've never seen Berkeley releasing "weighted," though they may say it (as on the website). From the representative I talked to (when I was confused about UC GPA vs. weighted GPA), UC GPA is weighted GPA; for UCs, there is no distinction between "weighted GPA" and "UC GPA," as that would defeat the whole point of a UC GPA (which is to cap weighting at 8 semesters in an attempt to equalize comparison of students' GPAs). So when UCs refer to "weighted GPA," they mean the UC GPA with the 8-semester cap.

Oh yeah they do. Their admissions website list the unweighted and weighted:

http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/freshmen.asp

But the UCGPA is 4.1-something. If you look at this website it says the GPA is 4.17 for Berkeley:

UC Admissions Statistics

I'm pretty sure that webesite uses the UCGPA. From looking at numbers from their pamphlets, websites, orientation, etc. they always have different weighted numbers. The 4.1-something is the UCGPA and the 4.2-something is the weighted GPA. Sometimes they'll call the UCGPA "weighted" for some reason. It's pretty confusing really, but that's the way they do it.

But even then, numbers fluctuate somewhat, which leads me to doubt one source over another. To be honest, there should be a larger jump between UC and W GPA.
