Berkeley Admissions?

Hey I'm planning to apply for transfer admission to Berkeley this fall. I have a few problems that I'd like to work out regarding course articulation, GPA calculation, and some other stuff. I contacted their office by phone and first they asked me to check with my own school (four-year out-of-state with no articulation agreement), but my school didn't have any office that could help me transfer out.

So I was just wondering how I can e-mail, call, or meet the right people to get my questions answered? Do they have like seminars and stuff? Thanks in advance.

what do you need to know... many of us on this site could be putting college counselors out of work. post ur questions.. they'll get answered here

Haha. Well here goes:

1) I checked assist.org to get an idea of the courses I have to take (IGETC is not recommended) for my intended major. Some of the basic courses match up (Calculus, Chemistry, etc.), whereas other courses are not so simple (Properties of Materials with lab). Credits don't match up either (for example: 4 at Cal, 3 at my school). I try my best to take similar courses but I can't be as sure as an admissions person.

How do I know that I am taking the right courses?

2) My school calculates GPA's differently. Rather than having the traditional system of:

A = 4, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, ...

My school has this:

A = 4, B+ = 3.5, B = 3, C+ = 2.5, C = 2, ...

Basically this means that a B+ at my school could have been a B+ or an A- at Berkeley. It's in the middle.

So my question is how will this affect my GPA calculation for admission?

3) If I take the SAT's (I and II) again, will they help my chances for admission?

That's pretty much all I have for now. Thanks in advance.

A) I dont know if this is what you did, but you can check the EXACT equivalencies for courses on assist.org. Just choose your community college and then Berkeley. Look at the agreement by major. If there is no equivalent, you simply cannot take that course at your current school and will have to take it at Berkeley. The adcoms keep the availability of prereqs in mind when they evaluate your application, so its not that big of a deal if you need to take some at Cal. I have to take 3 prereqs once I get there because they arent offered here. Keep in mind, however, that you also need to take care of College requirements, like reading and foreign language.

B) I dont think your GPA will have much impact on your chances for admission. The differences are slight. I think you might even self-report your GPA. In fact, Im almost sure of it. In the application you list every class youve taken, how many units it was worth, and what grade you got. This is the info used to calculate your GPA. It wont be weird like your school.

C) SAT information is not requested on the application. It doesnt matter what you got.

Thanks for your help, easymack63. Let me just clear some things up, though. I think I mentioned them in my second post.

A) I'm not from a community college and my university doesn't have an articulation agreement with them on assist.org or in general. But yeah, as you mentioned I'm trying my best to take as many of similar courses as possible.

B) I'm concerned that it is projected as lower than it really is because my B+ could have been an A- (or a lower B+) at Berkeley. My school doesn't have minus grades at all and thus the value of plus grades is raised a bit. Ideally I'd like to have the GPA on my transcript here be the one that they use so that it's unaltered. But I'll look into that self-report thing--it was what I did when I applied as a freshmen.

Bump... anybody else have info??
