I'm just about to finish up my first year at CCC and should have another year to go. However, I'm very behind in math- I started off in trigonometry and didn't get a class last semester, so that's where I am now (hoping to get pre-calc in the summer and calc 1 in the fall). Anyway, being behind in math, I can't take physics 101 next semester which will put me, after next spring, with all pre-reqs except I will only have 1 of the 2 required extra classes toward my major. So...

-Will I be 100% ineligible for transfer without that second class?
-Will Organic Chem 1 (my first of the two classes) transfer by itself (without Organic Chem 2) to fill half of the OC req?
-Are there any classes, aside from sequential math, chemistry, and physics that I can take to fullfill that requirement?

If I'm out of luck, which UCSD college(s) would be a good choice for a chemistry major? 8)

Ochem 1 will not transfer by itself. You need to have completed both of them and in addition take the ACS (which covers Ochem 1&2) with a score in the 75th percentile in order for your CC Ochem to transfer. I can’t tell you exactly how they will look at not having pre-reqs completed. I can tell you that I applied for ChemBio only missing Physics 7B (though I took 7C which set me ahead by fulfilling an UD class) and Bio 1A (needed 2 classes for full articulation) but I had everything else (IGETC, GenChem, Ochem, Calc 1-3 & taking Lin Alg this summer, & Phys 7A). Have you fulfilled Bio 1A yet? That would count towards your 2nd of the 2 additional classes.

I think it’s fair to say that last fall was a waste of time (all gen ed). Right now I’m in Chem 101 and Trigonometry, so I’ll be doing Chem 102 and Calculus 1 (hopefully) in the fall, then Calculus 2 (or 3 if 2 is offered in summer), Physics 101, and I had intended on OChem 1, although if it won’t transfer, is there really a point in that (also, is it only Berkeley it won’t transfer to or all collegs?)? Bio I haven’t taken, but if it will count as an additional class I can look into it.

Other UCs don’t seem to be as strict on prereqs so I’d imagine I could transfer to, say, UCLA or UCSD and finish up my lower division while consecutively starting on my upper division (correct?).

As an alternative option, you could apply to Chemistry in L&S which barely has any requirements. I’ve heard of a people having a fairly easy time transferring into the College of Chemistry (since it’s harder and generally small) provided you have the mandatory pre-reqs (which you could theoretically continue taking and complete during the Summer before you enroll at Cal). I’m not sure if this would work but I would recommend asking the CoC how you would go about transferring between majors. Good luck!

So, say, sign up for a BA and then transfer over to a BS (I did read a post earlier where someone said that transferring from L&S to Chem was 100% guarantee)?

I wish community colleges had science classes in the summer. Last summer Pierce College actually had a good chunk of the classes the offer in fall, including math up to Calculus 2. This summer the highest math they have is intermediate algebra…

No idea What part of CA do you live in?

San Fernando Valley (LA County).

Well the school I took my math classes at (Coastline Community College) is offering Pre-Calc in the Summer and it’s online. The school is in Orange County but you only have to show up to take the midterm & final or get it proctored. Registration just started today if you’re not able to get it at your school.

Not sure if that link will work.

A little far, but thanks for the info. I’m trying to apply for College of the Canyons- my registration date for summer is in 6 days and there’s still some spots left in pre-calc there.
