I got in, but im unsure if i want to attend. I know its a good school.
Has prestige. But i've also heard a lot of negatives. Dorms arent that
great, area isnt the best, a lot of competition, grade deflation, not much
access to professors, and undergrads getting much less attention than grad students. Does anyone have similar concerns? Or does every one think grade deflation and the lack of access to professors isn't as bad as everyone believes?

Also got into Rice, UCLA, UCSD. Others im considering are UCSB and Fordham cus both gave me great financial aid. Thoughts? Really confused Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

Nope, the dorms are great. area is pretty safe… well imo. As long as you don’t do stupid stuff should be ok… and im on south side. life is a competition. grade deflation. not that bad… i dunno. i have nothing to compare it to. professors have office hours. gsi’s are hella smart. i don’t think it’s as bad but i have nothing to compare it to.

I posted this in the Class of 2013 board, but I think more people look here…

I’m deciding between Cal and UCSB (for the financial aid). I guess it depends on if you want to be a big fish in a small pond or little fish in a big pond, haha.

I hear there is access to professors if you go to office hours (not many people do it so you’ll be at an advantage). Also, going to Cal should prepare you for anything life throws at you. So even though it’s hard, it’ll all be worth it in the end. As for dorming, I think it’s the people you meet that matter most and you’ll probably only live in the dorms for two years. I think the area would be totally awesome! Telegraph Ave. seems so cultured in itself… vintage shops, vinyl record stores, little stands. I’m from a SoCal suburb and would definitely love to be immersed in Berkeley culture… definitely eye-opening.

SB on the other hand is giving me a TON of aid, so as much as I REALLY want to go to Berkeley, SB is a hard school to pass up. It’s not as prestigous as Cal, but you’ll be set at any of the Tier 1 & 2 UCs since they are all highly regarded.

hmm.very tough. go with the major.

Yeh, tough decision. It’d be easier if ur choice wouldnt affect the next four years of ur life and then grad school/job opportunities down the road. Then again, i think it takes more than a prestigious college university to make a person successful. They have to have drive and desire…without either, u wont go anywhere. But it sure does help to have a berkeley or prestigious university diploma under your belt.

Oh and thanks konakai for your input.

got into rice? badass. I got rejected last year =
i would consider going there over berk (unless you’re really REALLY into engineering). My friend goes to Rice and she loves it, though she doesn’t really like texas heh

I’m definitely not going into engineering. prob poli sci (which i hear berkeley has a great program) and economics (hear berkeley is pretty strong too). Im unsure. Getting more aid at rice. Its a smaller school. Prob smaller classes. More professor interaction. But berkeley is only an hour and a half away from where i live. be nice to come back if i anything came up. Berkeley prob has more name recognition. yeh, idk :(

If you want to get away from home, go to Rice! I haven’t heard one negative thing about the school. I got accepted into both, and Rice is higher on my list (for engineering!), although I never visited either.

Wow, tough tough choice! Amongst all the negatives, you can be sure it’s not just Cal that experiences that. Either way, I really wish you the best of luck! Congrats getting into those schools!!! You should be very proud in whatever school you decide to go to!
