Since Berkeley doesn't offer an accounting major (only a concentration in Haas), and I'm mainly interested in accounting, my plan is to major in econ (something that I find interesting/fascinating) and take all the possible accounting classes in Haas. With this, I won't need to take the major requirements at Haas (assuming I get in) as, frankly, I'm not interested in them and because of that, I think they'll be a waste of time.

Economic/Math/Stats classes will count toward the 24 unit business core for the CPA and obviously the accounting classes will count toward the other 24 unit core.

What are the pros and cons of this path, in terms of job recruitment from firms such as, say, the big four? Or perhaps in general?

Many of the UC/CSU campus don’'t offer accounting as a major, but the curriculum of busi admin w/ accounting concentration is similar, if not equivalent, to an accounting major. If you’re mainly interested in accounting, by all means get in Haas if you can. You have better access to those accounting courses while you’re in Haas and better recruitment opportunities that exclusively available to Haas students.

Edit -
BTW, Micro/Macro Econ, Calc, Stats are requirement of most of the business program, including accounting majors.

And after 2014, there’ll be additional business/accounting requirement on top of the current 24/24. So you’d better make sure you have enough if you won’t be licensed before that time
