Berkeley economics or pre-economics?

When I applied to UCLA, I got admitted for pre-business economics major, but is it economics or pre-economics for Berkeley?
From assist: "Admission to Berkeley with the stated intent to major in Economics does not
guarantee acceptance into the major. A departmental application is required.
Transfer students must apply to the major during the first four weeks of their
first semester."
This thread describes what you have to do to get accepted into business economics major after you transfer to UCLA:

What do I have to do to get accepted into economics @ Berkeley (after I transfer)?

I was actually just thinking that myself…I don’t understand why they would reject you from the major since you file your major paperwork before you get any official grades…I don’t understand if it means they wait until you finish your first semester and receive your grades before admitting you to the major or what…

At Berkeley, everyone, at least within L&S, is undeclared upon entering. During your first semester, you should declare your major if you have met the prerequisites. Economics is a “capped major”, so you must declare at the beginning of your first semester (Fall of Junior year for transfers), but there is no guarantee that you will be accepted into the major after submitting your declare paperwork. There are certain classes you must register for and complete in the Fall (Stats, Intermediate micro or macro, and any calculus you haven’t finished I am pretty sure). In the instance of not being accepted into the Econ major, you would have to declare another major, such as PEIS, EEP, or any other major you meet the prerequisites for. If by the end of spring of your first year you haven’t declared a major, you may have a block put on your following fall registration (which can be removed by talking to a counselor and showing them a plan of attack to declare, so not a big deal).

CAtoNY, thank you so much for this information and the link!
I guess now it is easier to decide if I want to go to Berkeley or UCLA.
UCLA requires 3.5+gpa in econ11/101 and Berkeley requires 3 statistics classes.
Plus, at least if I don’t get accepted to business economics, I can try just economics lol

Berkeley requires only 1 statistics class. You have a choice of 1 of those 3.

Oh, I meant one of the 3. Still though…It is kind of a difficult situation, where I do not know if I am going to get accepted into economics major or not. I mean, I do not meet any prerequisites for other majors (like psychology), because for the past two years I have been following only UCLA business economics and other UC’s economics major requirements. So, if I choose UC Berkeley pre-economics over UCLA pre-business economics and I do not get accepted into economics, then what is the point of going to UC Berkeley without my major? Ahh, this decision would be so much easier if UC Berkeley just rejected me lol On top of everything, I have finals coming up…and people have already completed their SIRs and housing applications. All right, I will stop whining and complaining…lol

I called Berkeley yesterday.

They told me that these are the requirements for their Economics major.

1) Overall pre-requisite GPA of 3.0 (both pre-reqs taken at your CC and Berkeley).
2) Minimum GPA 2.7 in your uppder division pre-reqs at Berkeley.

They told me that if I met those, I should be fine.

however most transfers havent done any upper division pre-reqs… (or are they talking about the upper division that we wuold be taking during our first term)

if we have been accepted into berkeley as econ (L&S) we have well over 3.0 overall GPA thus far i would hope. (most hitting 3.6+)

so im guessing as long as we do decent (2.7+) GPA in pre-reqs we should be solid in our admissions to the economics department? haha sounds too easy with all this chat of how impacted the econ department is =D

quick question: what about those of us who aren’t in the econ department yet and wants to transfer to?

I got admitted as environmental economics and I am going to take summer classes to finish my prereqs before fall semester. so by the first semester when i apply if i have all those prereqs done do i have a chance?

bump 10char

@truucharms

What prereqs are you doing over summer?

economics 100B and stats 21?

You’re gonna need to switch from CNR to L&S to declare econ.

Congratulations on your Admission to UC Berkeley!

I know many of you are weighing admission offers from multiple universities at this time, and while we are trying to respond to all of your emails as quickly as possible, I wanted to send this information to you all now so you know what you need to do if you decide to attend Berkeley.

As a transfer student interested in the Economics Major, there are some important guidelines you should be aware of before you decide which school to attend and which classes to register for. Most importantly is that you are not officially admitted to the economics major yet; you must apply to the major during your first semester on the Berkeley campus. This means completing the prerequisite courses and enrolling in any remaining ones immediately. Admission to the economics major is not guaranteed; there is an application process and you must earn certain grades in your fall courses in order to be admitted to the major. Currently only 65% of students are admitted to the major. The students that are not admitted to the major must choose an alternative major instead of Economics. You may want to consider this when weighing your admission offers.
What are the prerequisites for the Economics Major?

There are five prerequisite courses for the Economics Major. All five classes (or their equivalent) must be completed prior to acceptance to the major and all must be taken for a letter grade. You should check your community college courses on assist.org to ensure that they will fulfill these requirements.

* Introduction to Economics (one course or equivalent required) Economics 1 or 2 (at Berkeley these courses include both micro and macro economics in one course)

  • Calculus: You must take both A and B of either sequence
Math 1A or 16A (or equivalent)
Math 1B or 16B (or equivalent)
  • Statistics 20, 21, 25 or any upper division statistics course
  • Intermediate Economic Theory (one course required to apply)
Economics 100A or 101A (or equivalent)
Economics 100B or 101B (or equivalent)

At least one math or stat prerequisite course must be taken at UC Berkeley. For transfer students, this is typically the statistics course. The prerequisite intermediate theory course must be taken at UC Berkeley.

If you do not already have completed a year of calculus and the introduction to economics courses, you must take these courses prior to starting at Berkeley, otherwise you risk not being admitted to the Economics Major.

If you are transferring from a 4-year college, you will need to have your transcripts reviewed by the Undergraduate Committee to determine what will count. Please email them to ugrad@econ.berkeley.edu. It takes approximately 2-4 weeks to evaluate these, and we will get back to you by email. Alternatively, you can bring them with you to CalSO this summer.
What do I need to do in my first semester at Berkeley?

All new transfer students are required to apply to the Economics Major their first semester. This means that you must complete or be enrolled in all of the prerequisites during your first term, and fill out the application form before the end of the fourth week of class. The application deadline for Fall Semester is September 18, 2009. For most transfer students, this means enrolling in Statistics 20, 21, 25, or an upper division statistics course, as well as enrolling in Economics 100A, 101A or 100B. (Note that you only need one of these courses to apply.) The remaining courses in your schedule will be electives towards your minor, other major, or for general interest. When you come to CalSO, we’ll give you a list of great courses from outside the department that come recommended by current and former students.
When you come to campus for Student Orientation in the summer, you will get an opportunity to meet with advisors from the Economics Department to hear more about the graduation requirements and opportunities available to economics majors. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact us at jenny@econ.berkeley.edu or gsadil@econ.berkeley.edu. Please be patient, as our students are currently in finals week at this time. It may take us some time to respond to your emails and phone messages. Emails are strongly preferred.

Congratulations again on your admission to UC Berkeley! We look forward to meeting you all at CalSO Orientation this summer!

Economics Department
University of California Berkeley

For those of you who did not fully read ^^^ “Currently only 65% of students are admitted to the major. The students that are not admitted to the major must choose an alternative major instead of Economics.” <— This worries me to some degree. I hope the 3.0 pre req GPA is really all you need.

So, I called Jenny Cornet (the undergraduate major advisor), her phone number is 510-642-6674 and email: jenny@econ.Berkeley.EDU. She said that the average GPA in the Berkeley prerequisites for the economics major is B- and they accept only 60-65% of students to the economics major. If you do not get accepted, then you have to choose another major: either environmental economy or political economy.

If you have the B- average for the pre reqs are you most likely in the economics major, or does the econ department review your application and determine if you’re a “well rounded student”, again for a second time, fit for the econ department? That is what I am wondering. Or is it that you just need to meet the minimum requirements?

they actually review your app. just because you have a 3.0 does not mean you get into the major.

That’s true. One of the reasons that only around 60% get accepted is because many of the applicants who get rejected did not meet the 3.0 minimum GPA prereq and the 2.7 upper div prereq GPA.

yea, my cousin who is at berkeley asked her friend whos an econ major. you really just need to meet the 3.0 requirement and do B- or better in your upper division your first term. he also said that hes heard of peopel getting in with a 2.7…
so its not as hard as people are making it out to be – of course not SUPER easy, but not SUPER hard =D
