berkeley eecs chances

ok, so is it worth applying eecs or just L&S? would undecided engineering be any easier?

Summer

Economics A

I go to a competitive public in california
Not sure about ELC

I know the pattern of improvement helps, but that B+ in math sticks out pretty bad.

I have hardcore classes senior year: AP CS, AP Physics, AP Psych, a math class at stanford, probably TA for a math teacher

I have two or three math and physics awards.
Might get Merit Semifinalist (216?)

Sports: JV Soccer (and club soccer), JV and V Track and Field, JV Cross Country

EC/ Service:
Coached a youth soccer team
Tutored math, physics and chemistry many hours at school
Not much when it comes to EC's

Worked for two summers at Stanford in Neurology Research Lab. Not seemingly related to EE or CS, but I did get my name on one of the published papers.

Independently learned a bit of JAVA.
I loved physics, and I'm interested in electronics.

BTW, any CS majors wanna tell how that compares to EECS?

pusherman:

UCB: Slight Reach (EECS)

Hmm you have a lot of B's on your report card.. But your math/science scores seem good.

EECS is probably the most difficult engineering major. Undecided is easier.

I'm unsure if you'd get into L&S; your humanities' grades don't seem that good...Hmmmm You definitely seem smart enough with your scores. Did you slack in class?

thanks alot.
I know there are many B's, but i was hoping the improvement over time would help, especially the all A's 2nd semester junior year. I didn't really take school seriously till junior year. Would berkeley engineering notice this or is it purely a numbers game (as i hear it is)?

slight reach/match

Visited Berkeley during spring break and talked with departments. EECS is probably THE hardest to get in. Even if you apply undecided Engineering, you have to COMPETE to declare EECS, it's that fierce. They said just straight out apply to EECS, I dunno though. Are you sure you want to do CS as a career?

i'm actually interested in electrical engineering just as much if not more than CS. From what i hear, the easiest route into EECS would be through engineering undecided. Is this true, at least for someone with my credentials?

I think you have too many B's on your transcripts, so Berkeley EECS would be a reach. I applied to EECS back in 2000 with the following stats and was still rejected: 1510 SAT, 800 IIC, 800 Chem, 780 Writing, 4.4 UC GPA, 9 AP classes with all 5's including Calc BC, Physics C, Chem, Bio, and CS AB, National Merit Finalist, National AP Scholar, Top 50 in National Chemistry Olympiad, 4-time Chicago math champion, etc.

blue- It looks like your doing EE at stanford now. maybe getting rejected from cal EECS isnt the end of the world. Did you have a low GPA like me or were you out of state or something?
Does anyone know if engineering ever accepts appeals. Would it be worth actually trying in school senior year to keep this option open?
Whatdyou people think of a math major w/ EECS minor?

Of course you should try in school, even during your senior year! (at least for the first semester ;) ). Are you going to be applying to Stanford? You're already taking courses there :) (EPGY, I assume?)

For majors, maybe consider Computer Engineering? (well I guess it doesn't apply to Berkeley)

I had a low GPA, basically straight B's in English and history because I didn't give a damn about them, slacked off and never read a thing. Out of state as well.

that makes me feel much better knowing you were OOS. (i love being Californian) How is EE at stanford?
If its true that it is possible to transfer into EECS from L&S at cal with excellent grades in the required courses (10% admitted), why not do it? 10% is also the admit rate for freshman applicants into EECS. Even if i dont get in, i would still be at berkeley, and could probably use the credits towards an EECS minor.
Also, no one has answered my question: If i come up with a good explanation for the discrepancy in my grades over time, would that help my chances at berkeley. It looks like UCLA asseses the grades seperately from the essay. Just wanted to know if berkeley is more holistic in their approach.
