Berkeley EECS freshmen first semester course

Hey guys, I am a newly admitted freshmen to UC Berkeley, and as a EECS major, I am hoping to gain some insight regarding the courses to choose. For now I have a tentative class list of CS61A, EE16A, Math 53, and another R&C/HSS course. I was hoping I could know how the workload is with this kind of schedule, and what R&C/HSS classes are recommended for a lighter workload, and other types of advice :slight_smile: Thanks!

@MelW

Your tentative class list looks pretty normal for those who receive either 4 or 5 on AP Calculus BC.
Don’t know if you have any prior experience in programming.
However, be prepared to spend a lot of time in CS 61A.
Most of kids just take English R1A/R1B to fulfill the R&C requirement.

@MelW

That schedule seems good. I might recommend Math 54 before 53, since EE 16A has a lot of linear algebra content and taking 54 concurrently might help you in both classes. For R&C, if you have received a 4 or a 5 on either AP English test, you can skip R1A and go straight to R1B. Also, English R1A/R1B tends to be a bit harder than other department’s offerings, from what I’ve heard.

http://english.berkeley.edu/course_semesters/34 gives instructors’ descriptions and reading lists for English R1A courses (click “Courses”). You may want to choose one with readings that look interesting to you. Some other departments with R&C courses have similar descriptions on their web sites.
