Hey guys,

If you are done with the IGETC and transfer to Cal, I would only be taking English major-related courses, right? I am rather confused.

Also, is there any advice on what I should do at Cal if I wish to take the LSAT and go to law school afterwards?

Thanks!

You still have to take an AC (American Cultures) class. Other than that, you can take all English courses if you so desire. I still took a couple of language classes and DeCals, as I think it would get a little tiresome to take only English classes for two years.

I wouldn’t mind.
So as far as requirements go, the English courses and AC? Sweet!

^ i believe i read somewhere on the tools website for Cal that you have to take 6 or so UD classes outside of your major as well.

Dreakol is right. For senior residency you need 6 upper division units (roughly 2 classes) outside of your major.

What!?
Well, thanks for the information then. Are there certain requirements? In other words, can I pick and choose which courses I want outside my major?

I am interested in some law courses (I took business law before), theater arts, etc. And oh God, no math or science. shudders

Oops, wrong thread. [delete this post]

I’ve been wondering this too! I would LOVE the thought of only taking English courses, but then again I love everything in the humanities as well. So if I’m taking a course outside of my major, are these lower or upper division courses? Also, I’ve asked this before, but if I’m missing 2 prereqs will I even be able to get IN to my major within a semester?

From a Cal English major:

You need:
4 Pre-Reqs (45A-45B-45C-Shakespeare)
A Pre-1800 Course
A Seminar
6 elective English Classes

For L&S you need:
An American Cultures course (which can be an English class, so you can fulfill 2 requirements)
6 upper division units outside of your major (double majors do not need to worry about this)

In order to declare English Major you need:
At least 30 units (transfers don’t worry about this)
Complete 45A or 45B or an articulated CC course
AND
one other Pre-Reqs.

Also, if anyone looked at the courses for fall and has questions about courses or professors i’ll be more than happy to answer.

According to Assist.org, there is also a Cal course called “Eng. 17” that is an English prereq. If this is the case and Assist isn’t messing with me, I have completed the CC equivalent, as well as the equivalent of Eng. 45A. Does this mean I have enough prereqs to declare, or no?

Also, according to Assist I was supposed to take 2 courses to complete the Eng. 45C requirement but was only able to take one. So was it really just a waste of time to basically only complete 1/2 a requirement since I’ll need to take all of 45C anyway?

Basically, here’s what I’ve concluded:
There are 4 English prereqs. I have completed Eng. 17, Eng. 45A, and half of Eng. 45C. Can I declare within my first semester even if 45B or 45C aren’t offered in the Fall or they’re full or something goes wrong for whatever reason?

I am assuming you mean Eng. 117 (that is the Shakespeare course). Most CCs only offer the 45A equivalent and fewer offer the Eng 117. The reason that 45B and 45C require two courses is that they cover time periods, whereas CCs usually divide classes by time periods AND American/English. The 45’s cover both American and English Lit.

Yes, you can declare at Calso if you wanted. Most likely you will have to take 45C anyways. Also, the 45’s and Shakespeare are offered EVERY semester and usually have two professors teaching them.

When you come up meet with the English Major advisor and ask if you can get credit for any classes.

I took 1 sem American Lit, 2 sem World Lit, Shakespeare, 1 Sem English Lit, and a couple others and I got credit for one lower div class.

If I would have meet with Ken, the advisor, ealier I could have gotten credit for a 45 course.

Well…
I took ENG1A (Freshman composition) and ENG1C (Critical Thinking& Analysis), which are IGETC requirements, of course.
And then I’m taking four lit courses right now: Modern American Lit, Shakespeare, Intro to Modern Poetry, and Survey of English Literature (English meaning British).

missyujin
I would bring all your transcripts (the advisor didn’t ask me for mine) and try to get credit for 45C. Which time period is the English Lit?

Romantic Era, Victorian Era…and I think we talk about Gothic later.

OK ya, I would argue for credit for 45C
