Hey Everyone,

I was accepted into UC Irvine as a transfer student for the Fall 2012 Quarter but I was dropped from my math class last month because the Professor was fired. That leaves me without a transferable math class.
I was looking into the Berkeley Extension Program for the Intro to Stats class. Has anyone taken this class online and if so, can it be completed and passed realistically in about 8 weeks? I am pretty good at math, but I have not taken a math class in over a year. What are my chances? At this point, I really have nothing to lose but I am just asking for some feedback from anyone who has taken the online classes at the extension program. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I completed the stats class in less than 6 weeks. It was not that difficult, but just make sure you understand what youre doing so you’re prepared for the final.

I took it with Makan Rokni and he was wonderful.

His class was the one that I was looking at enrolling in. I have never taken a math course online, how is it? Does he give lectures weekly or do you just work at your own pace and finish when ever you complete all the work? Also, is the grade based solely on the proctored final or are there quizzes in between? I know it is a lot of questions and I appreciate all of your help fluxrad. Thanks! =)

From what I remember, there are just assignments that you complete at your own pace. You just use the textbook and his posted lecture notes (no lecture to listen/watch). There is a midterm I believe (once you complete the first half of the assignments), but I remember it being pretty easy since it was open book and not timed.

The most difficult part of it all was the proctored final exam. It’s comprehensive so it asks questions from the beginning to the end of the class. I did not study at all for the final and I received a C.

As a note on Statistics in general: The formulas/equations in Statistics are NOT difficult at all (not to me, anyway). I thought Algebra was more difficult, LOL. Stats consist of word problems mostly, but not long crazy word problems, just problems that you need to understand and correctly identify the right formulas that will solve the problem.

I wouldn’t be scared about the class at all. The book he uses is VERY helpful and he assigns ALL homework problems that are from the textbook. You can use the textbook examples to solve the questions, and on odd # questions, the answers are in the back of the book. He’s pretty good at assigning an even question that is exactly the same as an odd number question, so if you can’t figure it out, just go to the odd number question answer and see how it was solved, then apply it to your problem.

Hope this helps!

Oh and your grade is based on the homework assignments, the midterm, and the final. It is difficult to get a bad grade since homework and midterm are open book and at your own pace. He gives partial credit to homework answers that are wrong, but almost there.

Thanks so much! I dont feel as nervous taking it anymore :)

Hi was the midterm online? Or proctored?

The midterm was online. Only the final was proctored.

I too XB Intro to Stats and had a very different experience of it. I’m not great at math to begin with and was a bit rusty, but I found the homework to be fine because it was open book, as was the midterm. However, keep in mind that the final is a huge part of your grade, so if you do poorly on it you will do poorly in the course. I completely froze up during the final, so it’s the only C on my transcript. For me, the online format was a nightmare – I’ve since realized that I’m much more of an auditory learner and that not having someone there to explain things to me in person made succeeding in the course really difficult. I wouldn’t personally recommend XB’s Intro to Stats, but it might work for you. ALSO, I believe in my class I was unable to submit more than one assignment per week, and there were 11 or so assignments. Double check this with your instructor if you need to finish in eight weeks.

Olivia brings up a good point actually. I was able to finish my course in 6 weeks because I didn’t start until a month in. If the assignments only open up a week at a time, then I would have had them open up for me perfectly. If you take the course, you should check if you will be able to complete the course in under 8 weeks.

Thank you Olivia! I took the course a few years ago so my memory is a bit rusty.

Olivia, do you remember which Professor you had?

Did any of you take this course prior to transferring and having an issue with it or was it readily accepted? I want to sign up for the UC Berkeley online extension course for Intro to Stats but I was just informed that some schools might not accept it as a valid replacement for a regular CC course. I plan to apply for a UC anyways so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, but I just want to be sure…

I am taking the self paced pre calc class. It’s pretty easy online-they just use my math lab so if you’ve ever used that you are already used to it. The assignments are available all at once (they don’t open up one week at a time) but there is an official rule that you can only submit one assignment per week, and you must spend one month per unit in the course. Whether or not the professor enforces this is up to them. If you are on a strict deadline, I’m sure you could email the prof and explain that you need to complete it faster and do 2 assignments/week or whatever.

If the class is an X class, then that means it is an official “UC Berkeley approved” course, so none of the UCs should have a problem. However, certain majors may not accept the online or self paced classes (UCB Econ does not accept math x1a). If the class is XB/XBW then that means it is exactly the same as the UCB class by that same number, so NOBODY should have a problem with it. If the class does not have an X, then you will probably have a hard time getting some other school to credit you.

These will all go on your UC transcript and it will say you took them at UCB. That’s why it’s especially important that you do well in them because if you get a bad grade, it will hurt your GPA after you transfer (whereas your CCC grades won’t be counted). This could affect you getting into honors, etc.

I took what was then the three semester Calculus series that is now Math X1A, Math X1B and Math 53 from the U.C. Berkeley Extension by correspondence (This was eons before the internet) while I serving overseas in a war zone. When I returned to the U.S. and enrolled in the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of Maryland College Park as an
Astronomy major I received full credit there for single and multi-variable Calculus. UMDCP
is a very rigorous place for science majors and if they will accept U.C. Berkeley Extension credits I think any school will.

I thought I would throw my two cents in here. The online Intro to Stats course by UCB extension was hell, and I ended up dropping out. Not only was it harder than AP Statistics, but it looks like it was meant for Statistics majors.
There are so many formulas to memorize that my AP Stat teacher allowed students to use the calculator for. There are no calculators allowed on the final, so every formula must be drilled into your head.
The HW problems are hardly solvable from the book because the book is not written well nor concisely.
There are PAGES of formulas I wrote down.
I do not recommend unless you are a math major.
