Berkeley - How?

Hey everybody,

I am an international student from Singapore, thinking of applying to Berkeley. I am, however. not sure how good a school it is.

BAck Ground. SAT 1550, 2300, combined best 2350- 800 780 770
SAT II 780 790 800

I have pretty strong ECs

I am a student in probably the top school in Singapore, it has a great reputation with American colleges etc. I am a decent student, good but not top of my class - this is the top 3% of the country in the school, so loads of smart people.

Just want to know, do u think Berkeley can be considered a safety, MAtch ( i think so?) or a reach school for someone like me.?

Any info or help wud be great,Thanks.

I guess really you're question how good a school Berkeley is, but that is a fairly good indication that you are questioning Berkeleys reputation. Yes, it has a strong one. Does it deserve it? That's another issue. If it's there, if people in other countries can recognize Berkeley more readily than half the ivy league, you tell me if it has a strong reputation. if you want to get a good education, this school has perhaps the best faculty in the world all around. Yes, it's up there. YOu can seek out a education, but Berkeley is supposedly different in that at other, probably better schools, the education is handed to you, whereas here you have to seek it. It is there for the taking by the willing, sometimes needing a bit of luck.

As to your chances, who knows? Your chances are probably pretty good. You probably have a better idea of your chances from other people at your school in the past and how they have done. If people like you, in your situation with similar stats got into schools like Berkeley, then it's a match. If not, it's a reach. if almost all of them did, then it's a safety. Does the all but arbitrary distinction make a difference to you? If you get in, that's great. If not, I'm sorry. Apply to schools that are much easier to get into as well, just so you will have a safety. Only very strong students can claim Berkeley caliber schools as safeties, and as you drift further from the state geographically, the more pompous it sounds and more likely you are wrong about it. What I'm saying is that you probably have a good chance, but labeling it with one word or another is a waste of time. Apply and tell us what happens.

Thanks drab. Of course I recognise BErkeley's outstanding reputation, in no way Am i questioning it.

Yes, I will be applying to berkeley. Do you then have any suggestions as to some other quality schools that can perhaps be considered safetys or very close to ebing safetys?? Thanks.

where do people from your school that have your grades and scores usually end up?

the international application process and admissions process is something that i don't feel i know enough about it to comment with any certainty. If i were you, I'd accept you, if that makes you feel better. Basically, look into who gets in with stats like yours from your school. Do they tend to get into Berkeley and the other schools you're considering? If so, you're in good shape. If not, then you aren't, but such is life. It's obvious from your stats that you're capable of doing well, so no matter where you end up, you will be alright.

thanks drab.

We have a very high acceptance rate at michigan 96%, cornell 60%, CMU 75%

at toptop schools like yale 5/60 students.

For berkeley in 2003, it was 23 out of 39 people accepted.

Well, thanks. I hope berkeley is a match and I am able to get in.
Thanks for the encouragement, guys.

Do you have any possible ideas fo safety schools? looking to major in econs, but not totally decided yet - want to explore and LEARN in university.

Thanks again,

Hi,
I don't know much about safety and reach calculations, but I do have some recommendations. These are all west coast schools with large Thai or Asian communities in the vicinity. Looking at your scores, most should be a match or safety. Good luck!

UCLA - Great school and L.A. has a good sized Thai community
http://econweb.sscnet.ucla.edu/

USC - Same
http://www.usc.edu/dept/LAS/economics/

UCI - Same and should be a safety for you
http://www.socsci.uci.edu/econ/econ.html

University of Washington @ Seattle - Great school and large Asian community. Beautiful campus. http://www.econ.washington.edu/

Occidental College - Nice west coast school and good community resources.
http://departments.oxy.edu/economics/program.html

thanks buirre, I will look into the schools.

Berkeley actually has one of the highest percentages of both international and asian students of any top U.S. college. And, your SAT scores seem well within their range.

You can look at their specific admission & student background stats here:
