Berkeley Info Session on Math, Science & Engneering

My son received an email inviting him to attend an informative sesson on Berkeley's math, science & engineering departments. Although they firmly state that they have NOTHING to do with the admssions department , I question why they would selectively send out these invites. Only a few kids in my sons physics class also received this letter and many did not. He also has a friend who is now a freshman at Berkeley and said that everyone he knows who received that letter last year got accepted and those who didn't receive this letter got rejected. Obviously we are going to go to the session but does anyone have any thoughts or comments on the validity of this letter and what it means? Thanks!

It's a student recruiting tool, just as many other letters from colleges are. I'd go to such a session if I knew about it (Berkeley is of interest to my family, but we're out of state). I wouldn't assume anything about admission chances based on attending a meeting or not, but I'd definitely go to a meeting that describes a college of interest to one of my children.

My sister received the same e-mail. She has taken 5 science classes in high school, three of them AP classes, and has scored well on her AP tests. She is planning on attending the meeting even though the e-mail said that there was no affiliation with Admissions. You never know WHO you might meet!
