What are the easier and harder majors to get into at UC Berkeley? Is it going to be hard to get into berkeley by applying under an econ major? How hard is it to switch majors within a college such as from economics to mathematics? Also, can I apply to Haas if I major in econ freshman year or do i have to major under Undeclared/Pre-Business Administration to apply for Haas? Thanks for all of your help!

Math and Econ are both in Letters & Science. L&S admits all students undeclared, you have to complete pre-reqs and petition for your major later. Econ is impacted (need a 3.0+ to declare), I don’t think math is impacted/capped.

Haas admissions are a bit different. You can’t apply to Haas right now, you do that during sophomore/junior year after you’re accepted to Cal. I don’t think it matters which major you apply under (anything L&S should be okay?), but I haven’t dealt much with Haas so you should double check that.

My general advice for questions like this is to apply to the college and major you want to be in. If freshman admissions are competitive, changing into that major later will be as well… it’s better to know from the start. For L&S econ vs math shouldn’t make a huge difference in terms of chances.

@failure622 okay thanks… so it will not be harder to apply under an impacted major like econ? berkeley only takes into account that i applied to L&S?

Yes. And yes.

You can apply to Haas if you’re in any college; they just ask you to list Business as your primary major if you plan on doubling.

Typically, most students won’t be able to declare their Econ major until after Haas decisions come out anyways (both of which typically occur in the second semester of your sophomore year) so keep in mind that you may not even be declared by the time you apply.
