I’m thinking about doing MCB but am not very sure yet. There’s a possibility that I might switch major. 1A is more widely accepted but since MCB accepts both but prefers 10A, which one should I take?
Go to thread http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html and ask your question there. The guy who is answering questions there knows everything.
Depends on what your other possible majors are and what math they require.
Review the calculus requirement for majors that you would consider and discuss with an advisor. I believe 1A offers more flexibility among different majors if you should change your major.
The big difference is the textbook for the 10 series is called Calculus for Life Science majors or something along those lines. It’s interchangeable. Pros of 10: you get to meet more people in your major. In August, when you’re actually registering for classes, they’re going to get pretty filled up pretty fast, so I’d keep both in mind and see which has spots open when you’re registering. Even if you switch majors they’re interchangeable, but if you’re worried, pro for Math 1A would be broader baseline acceptance.
Take Math 10A
- Preferred by Bio and interchangeable (other majors will accept it)
- Meet people in major
- The statistics (Methods of Mathematics: Calculus, Statistics, and Combinatorics Calculus) that’s involved is good for pre-med and might be useful later on. (I don’t know whether it replaces any Statistics classes in other majors, but it’s still extra)
