Berkeley On-Campus Housing

What are you guys putting for your housng preferences?

My list went a little something like:

Unit 3

Clark Kerr

Clark Kerr

Foothill

Any

I was going to do Wada, but it was considered to be Off-Campus Apts?
We still have time to switch it up though, so let me know where you guys are going to live/ what you think of my list/ any rumors you've heard about housing!

Or discuss anything you damn well feel like discussing.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!<3<3

I saw that Wada was considered off campus, but do you think Berk. will cover the fees for that? Or is financial aid just not going to take any part with Wada? I mean, overall, I would go for Wada, Towle, then I don’t know the rest.

I think they do but not as much as they would if you had on-campus housing. but someone feel free to correct me!

AND C’MON GUYS I WANNA KNOW WHERE EVERYONE WANTS TO LIIIIIVEEE

I’m deciding between living off campus with a couple friends or living in the on campus transfer apartments. Living with friends off campus is cheaper by about 200-300 a month, compounded even more by the fact that for some reason transfer apartments don’t come with meal plans… Unfortunately, they’re a bit messy, but then again, living on campus doesn’t mean I won’t get messy roommates. The building we found is nice and the apartment has two bedrooms, a bath, kitchen, living area, though we are bunking up two per bedroom so it might get a bit cramped. It is also close to campus (northside on Shattuck), less than a mile from the center of Berkeley.
However, these past two years of JC have kind of robbed me of the dorming experience. I’ve dearly missed it and want to experience it, but forcing my parents to pay an extra 200-300 a month seems quite selfish. I’m so torn. Opinions anyone?

if you live in the dorms that are classified as “on-campus” the meal plan is included in the cost i believe.
however, you really do seem to have a great thing going with your friends. even though i badly want to live on campus too, i think i wouldnt mind getting an apt with my friends for several hundred dollars less each month. if you just keep an ear out for on campus activities, im sure you wont be missing out on too much.

Thanks for your insight Redo. Are you signing up specifically for the transfer-only buildings in Clark Kerr and Unit 3? Whatever you pay will come with meal plans then?

I just a youtube video of a Clark Kerr dorm and those are HUGE (though it is a bit of a walk from campus). My only issue is the restrooms in the dorms. I feel like there is no sense of privacy.

Although, now I’m beginning to like Clark Kerr too. I think they have two restrooms whereas Wada only has one. (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

Living off campus makes a lot of sense too, but I kind of want to experience dorm life (although apartment life will suffice) and meet new people. Plus from what I can tell, Wada also has grad students, so rooming with grad student would definitely be a plus. Especially if they’re within my major.

Honestly, my biggest concern lies with the restroom and having some privacy. What do you guys think?

EDIT: And for clark kerr I am talking about suites.

gottagettocal - no i actually dont mind if i live with freshman/other transfers/other upper div/or even grad students. as long as i can make some new friends! haha i wont know anyone there. and yes, whatever i pay will come with a meal plan. i know you can buy some kind of a meal plan if you live off campus, so if youre concerned about that you should look into it!

hapyro - yes in the suites it seems as if there are two toilets, two sinks, two showers…but all in the same room haha. I dont think you should worry about restrooms and privacy as much, because i’m sure whoever you live with would have the same concerns and therefore would take care to respect your privacy if you respect theirs.

but yeah my onlyy issue with clark kerr is the ginormous walk to campus. jeez its like a mile! time to invest in a scooter LOL

So is Wada the cheapest option? Its a little over 9k, add food, thats 10k+ which is still much cheaper than many other housing options. What I don’t understand is that the 9k price is listed below

[Living at Cal 2011-2012, UC Berkeley Housing](http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/unit2_wada.html)

are different compared the much higher rates for unit 2

[Living at Cal 2011-2012, UC Berkeley Housing](http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/rates.html)

Is Wada in unit 2 but priced differently? What’s missing?

Thanks

Other than the living at Cal site, is there a place where we can see better pictures of the dorms? That being said, I’m definitely leaning toward Wada for the chance to meet more transfers  or Unit 3 b/c its so close to the gym.

I second the pictures thing – need to know if its worth giving up my room at home to live on campus lol. I also read that their done with tours for the semester which sucks. D: I would’ve gone to Cal Day then if I had known I had a chance of getting in. -_-

does anyone have a more comprehensive view of the housing options out there?

1 more bump :/

Probably not going to bother with a meal plan Redo. We got a kitchen at the apartment we’re leasing so I’ll just learn to cook
I’m planning on taking the Chemistry of Cooking decal haha.

Here are my preferences

 1. Unit 2 double room in mini-suite
 2. Unit 1 double room in mini-suite
 3. Apt - Unit 2 double room in Wada apt
 4. Foothill double room in suite
 5. Any location - any size

Can you indicate “suite” when you choose? I didn’t start the housing app yet. Right now I’m still debating on what to list as my preferences. I’m thinking: Wada, Foothill (suite) or Clark Kerr (suite).

Is it unlikely we’re going to get something we didn’t list, or does this happen to a lot of students? Does anyone know?

Also: Can anyone rank the choices based on popularity? Which ones are the most popular?

i think the units are the most popular and then wada, clark kerr…but clark kerr can be really unpopular because its like a mile walk from campus lol.

and ugh sorry i haven’t been participating much in this thread…i just dont know the majority of the answers to the questions you guys are asking :/

edit: i’ve also chaged my housing prefs to

 1. unit 3 d
 2. clark kerr d in s
 3. clark kerr d
 4. wada d
 5. any

however, i think i might change them again…

Is foothill popular? I think I’m going to make “foothill suite-style” my first choice.
And what about the Channing-Bowditch apartments? They look really nice too.
I’d prefer a “quiet” atmosphere for sleeping and studying. I figure that I can always go out to party somewhere else.
Is Clark Kerr also known to be quiet?

Would my chances of getting into my choices be better if I picked triple suites instead of double suite? I’m assuming triples are less popular, but I honestly don’t mind.
