this is a pretty popular debate but im having trouble finding informed opinions with friends/family.. want to major in finance

Berkeley:
pro - reputation, west coast/cali, bschool ranked 3rd by USNEWS
con - reapply to haas, heard its pretty cut throat with getting classes

NYU:
pro - stern is 2nd finance USNEWS, in nyc, good connections, scholars program
con - NYU as a whole is not as highly esteemed

I would go to Stern, because you're already accepted there, whereas if you went for Haas, you'd have to apply at the end of your 2nd year, which means that your place in Stern is sure while being in Haas is unsure.

Regarding the US News ranking, Stern's score is only 0.2 lower than Haas, so there isn't much of a ranking difference between the two. (Haas is rank 3, Stern is rank 5)

Your location says that you're in Maine, so if you went to Berkeley, you'd be an out of State student; out of State tuition at Berkeley is close to NYU's tuition.

thanks for the help - i noticed everyone's talking money but thats not really the issue here because as someone mentioned, its gonna be about the same either way

in addition to the original question - which school would help more for getting into a solid graduate school?

It really depends what kind of job you want...

Berkeley gives a Business Administration degree. There is no finance, international, etc concentration degree. Just plain old Business Administration. This can be good in some cases. If you do finance in Stern, it might be hard to get jobs outside of finance.

But, if I were you, I'd go Stern because you live in the east coast. Don't go to a public school if you can afford a private because privates just look better lol. Cal is also having some budget issues. It's getting better and will probably go away in two years, but still. Ummm, class sizes are big in Cal. Also, I was told that Cal only has a 80% graduation rate when I went there for freshmen admit day... So take 80%, and of that 80%, only 40% get into Haas. What...thats like 32% of Berkeley freshman admits....ouch.

I'm personally going to Berkeley, but then again, I'm instate and got a ton of financial aid

is all this talk about cal schools having budget problems a big rumor? i have a feeling it was just mentioned by one person and snowballed from there...

anyway, yea finance is the plan and i dont see my future job deviating from that field and I find it tough to turn down NYC when finance is my field of study....

its just berkeley is such a big name (obviously a bad reason) but also great for business too in addition to having that prestigious rep.. im runnin outta time

I think Stern is a better bet because you will have 4 years of business education - actually giving you the benefit of specializing in something rather than just taking core courses. You will be better prepared for the work force because you'll have more courses under your belt and will have a better undertstanding of business. And if you know you want business for sure, there's no point in going to Berkeley and waiting 2 years to start if you do in fact get accepted.

I went to Berkeley freshmen admit day, and budget problems arent that much of problem anymore. It was more of last years problem. The news is fadding away.

About the cutthroat classes, how many units of college credit did you have from AP and community college courses? If you have sophomore standing (30 units) already, you can be one of the guys who makes it cutthroat.

But, if I were you, I'd go to NYU. So what that it's business school is 0.2 points below Haas... It's finance that you really want. Also, you live in New York and will probably find your career in the east coast. NYU is more known there. Hmmm, Berkeley's competition is cutthroat - classes are big and introduction classes weed out the incompetent. You can probably get better grades at NYU and thus increase your chances to a grad school. Lastely, it's private! Why would you go to an old public school when you can go to a spanking clean private? :-P

it really depends on you!
berkeley and stern are 2 totally different schools.. different environments, locations, types of people, etc.
i personally, chose berkeley over stern honors because stern has no campus, and i've grown up right next to nyc (so going to school there wasn't anything new)
it's really up to you, did you visit?
i didn't decide until i visited both schools

thanks for the input.. i have not visited berk, no, but the two environments are so different that i really dont think its that necessary.. i know berkeley has more of that traditional/conventional college campus feel, but im a big fan of the city too and i dont mind the supposed 'lack of a campus' that some people cant stand.

someone mentioned private schools being better than public schools? is that true at all? i was pretty sure berk's national rep exceeded nyu's..

and i will probably stay on the east coast (Northeast even) when i do get a job

man, less than a week to decide.. i appreciate all the things you guys have to say, thanks

lol some of the people on this board are wayy too in love with stern.
i don't know, maybe because i live in northern jersey and so many students from my school end up going there, i have a different perception of it
