do you hear about people who get berkeley's regents scholarship but no acceptance to ucla?

Yes, I am not a candidate for the UCLA Regents but I did get invited for Cal Regents. :] Some of my friends had the reverse happen to them; invited to UCLA but not Cal. I’m pretty happy with it though since I preferred Cal over UCLA anyways~ Does this mean we’re accepted ( i read that on another thread)

I’ve gotten both - my friend who got Regents for UCLA has not gotten it for Cal, and they got accepted into Yale >_>.

As for the acceptance, that is what I keep hearing. Fingers crossed on the day of the interview :)

how many of the people who actually receive the regents scholarship actually goes to berkeley or la? do they end up giving out less than 200 awards?

There are almost exactly 200 Regents recipients yearly…Less than 200 matriculate yearly, I would guess.

Good luck on your interview. Remember to have fun with it :)

It’s actually 600+(?) awards offered per year and 200~230 people accept it. The 600 number is really fuzzy since that’s never announced, but when they say someone was awarded the scholarship it means they actually matriculated. Typically for scholarships of this caliber, only 1/3 of the people accept (keep in mind a lot of these people decide to go to Harvard, MIT, etc…, and others may prefer UCLA, especially if they got Regent’s there too), hence the 600 number.

Berkeley’s Regents’ is unique in that it’s not much of a recruiting factor unless you are eligible for more than the $1000/year base stipend, and it comes with almost no extra privileges (no telebears priority for one). There are other much better scholarships in the UC system designed to pull in students - Berkeley thinks (knows?) that it can rely on its name alone.

and small interview tip: if you have an awesome letter of rec from a teacher, it can’t hurt to bring it.

does anybody else have any other interview tips for berk regents?

It’s just like any college interview. Just be yourself, show that you are interested in Berkeley, be nice/polite/humble (not an arrogant dick), connect with your interviewer (which is a professor from Berkeley I believe? But don’t be intimidated. Remember they are trying to recruit you as well!!! ), and be passionate about what you are interested in studying or in contributing to the campus.

It’s really not that big of a deal. I went to a lot of college/scholarship/internship interviews and the regents interview was by far the most pleasant experience of all. Congrats, good luck and have fun!!

This is from a long time ago, but I still remember some details of my interview. It is key to seem interested in UC-Berkeley. I was asked what other schools I applied to and got into early. While providing the list, I should have gave some story that UC-B was my top choice (you might need to practice fibbing here before the interview if you really want the Regents but aren’t that set on UCB).

As posted above, the R&C is pretty weak. You don’t get priority enrollment, which is the #1 thing you would want from “the most prestigious scholarship”.

I think it came across in the interview that I felt entitled to R&C. So you should keep in mind that your faculty interviewer has to like you and want you to come.

are there other forms regents candidates need to fill out (ie additional essays, rec letters)? the email only mentioned abt the interview and i didnt get any mail from them yet… btw is the interview the most important determinator for this scholarship?

i got one to UCLA too but i’m a transfer student. haven’t looked at the requirements but i think i only need an essay and a recomondation. didn’t get a berkeley one though :(

Did anyone get a physical Regents letter yet from Cal (through regular mail)?

@hmmmm: are you supposed to? I know UCLA gives it out physically. Didn’t look into Cal :(

Apparently they got one last year. I think what happened was the second email they sent was just the letter they sent last year. I’m not sure, though.

^So I take it you didn’t receive one?

I got the two emails last week and a little postcard in the mail today.

I’ve still received nothing physical from Cal. Got the two emails, of course, a while ago.

were two emails sent in years past or a single email and a physical letter?

are there any additional forms we need to fill out? besides attending the interview…

Ok, I’m officially opting to not drink the koolaid; there is still no solid evidence that things will be same this year as in past years. There have been no legitimate inquiries made to Berkeley itself and people are being a bit too quick to assume everything will just happen to work out as it always has.

Unless there is relaible, conclusive evidence that invitation=acceptance for THIS year (like if current scholars confirm with the RCSA or a counselor and post the confirmation), then I don’t think any invitees should congratulate themselves just yet on admission. If someone finds something solid, then we can celebrate; until then, I for one, am assuming I’m still prone to rejection.

sorry hmmmmmmm but I’m looking at the glass half full, and am very proud to just have been invited for this opportunity, whatever the case may be.
