Berkeley, Rice, Northwestern, or Johns Hopkins

All of these vary in geological area of course but which one would be the best overall in academics and just a overall college atmosphere. I am looking to go into Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry.

They are all near the same level but how would you guys rank them in order of selectivity and academics.

Thanks.

::All of these vary in geological area ::

hahaha ooohhh that made my day.

but with regards to your question, this is how i see it:

in terms of prestige, Berkeley>Northwestern/JHU>Rice

in terms of undergrad academics, Northwestern/Rice>JHU>Berkeley

Among schools of this level (very very high), ALL will have excellent programs in basic subjects like biology and chemistry. Since these schools all have VERY different locations, atmospheres, and weather, make your decision on those types of factors, not some arbitrary rating of academic departments.

Again, TourGuide is spot on. For the standard run of the mill majors like biology and chemistry, all 4 schools would provide you with excellent educations. Other factors to consider are: location & its surrounding, school size, political tilt (liberal/very liberal), male/female ratio…etc.

If “prestige” or “wow-factor” if you will, does matter to you, Berkeley outshines them all

Which school would be the most fun or diverse or just like the best atmosphere.
I heard Johns Hopkins is like so competitive, no one has fun. And Berkeley is like Asian town.

NU has d-1 sports, a huge greek scene and is just outside Chicago.

"in terms of prestige, Berkeley>Northwestern/JHU>Rice"

"If “prestige” or “wow-factor” if you will, does matter to you, Berkeley outshines them all"

that is most definitely not true from where i'm from, tell someone you go to northwestern, they are extremely impressed, tell someone you go to berkeley, you might as well tell them u of i. Berkeley only out-prestiges northwestern in california.

elsijfdl, i'm guessing you live in the midwest? believe me, i love it when people are impressed I go to NU, but realistically speaking Berkeley is so much more well known nationally and internationally by your average joe. NU is still a better school, though, and when it comes to getting a job it might even have the edge ;)

If the letters "f" "u" and "n" figure into your decision, then you might want to leave that wacky Baltimore school off your list. The other 3 all have their moments. but have 3 VERY different meteorological climates. Rather than split academic hairs, you might want to make your decision on whether you'd prefer to (1) sweat, (2) shiver, or (3) pass out at a Greatful Dead concert.

yeah, i live in the midwest lol

I just thought I'd throw this out there: Rice does not have a Greek scene, but from what I can tell so far and what I hear from other students, this has no effect on its fun-factor (or its parties). Also, if it's of any importance, the Princeton Review ranked Rice number one in its "Quality of Life" and "Lots of Race/Class Interaction" categories and number three for "Best Overall Academic Experience" for 2007. Make of that what you will.

Yay for school-promotion!

yeah the guy i know who goes to rice really loves it, also job opps are great, rice is all-around a really great school

I gotta figure out which one im going to do early. Berkeley's system is what? There is just one deadline.

The UC system has just has one deadline, I believe it's Nov 1. You should know that Berkeley accepts some of its students for fall and some for spring. So you could apply, technically get accepted, but not be able to start until spring 2008. (This happened to quite a few of my D's friends.) Also, apparently the UC's are "overbooked" for this year, and classes like Economics are double waitlisted this year at Berkeley.

Personally, I think Northwestern is a fantastic school. When we visited it last spring, I was blown away by the beauty of the campus, proximity to Chicago, extent of undergraduate opportunities and lack of TAs (teaching assistants).

Of course, if you apply ED and are accepted that's pretty much it. Can you afford to visit?

So technically if i apply to NU or Rice Early Decision, I can't do Berkeley either even though there is only one deadline?

if you are accepted ED to a school, you are supposed to withdraw the rest of your applications. I suppose you could leave them in to see where you get in, but that would be kind of mean to people applying, and even if you got in, you wouldn't be able to attend unless you want to pay tuition at both schools heh.

If you are accepted to Rice or NU in December, then I'm pretty sure Berkeley will ignore you application. I checked, and the deadline for Berkeley is actually Nov. 30, but you won't hear the outcome until late March/early April.
Hope that helps, you could confirm this with your guidance counselor... I'm relaying how things worked last year with my D's apps.

You could also choose not to apply to any schools ED, apply to Rice Interim Decision (which is non-binding and has a Dec. 1 deadline), and apply to the rest regularly.

I hate to agree, but that's certainly the impression I got when I visited.

Regarding (3): don’t forget the wondrous “trip” while listening psychedelic sound of Jefferson starship’s miracles….
