I've heard they are a lot more work than 1-unit's worth. Also, I'm a little worried about how disciplined I would be to teach myself the material. Is it worth it though, or would it be better for me to fill this requirement at a community college where the class isn't self-pace.

I'm thinking of the C++ self-paced course (CS 9F). My last programming course was CS61A 3 semesters ago.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve never taken one myself, but I’ve heard from others that they’re pretty bad…

I took one. Did like 2 assignments in the beginning. Postponed all the work until the very end. Too much too handle. NP’d the class.

Self pace courses are not bad as long as you pace yourself. Yes, it’s not really 1 unit of work but the projects are decent enough to help you understand the main aspects of the language of your choice. It’s worth taking if you really want to learn a new language. If you’re just rusty in something, you’ll eventually take an upper div that requires said language (C, Java) so just hold out until then.

Self-paced courses are best when you already know the subject but you did it a while ago that you need to refresh the memory. I tried to take CS 9G with only E7 knowledge and I had to drop after 2 weeks after trying and trying b/c the homework was downright impossible for me and the tutors were completely useless. (sorry, but if you are a tutor for the self-paced course and reading this, you guys just weren’t aware why we’re having trouble even though I tried to explain in many ways why I’m having trouble. you guys were just too smart for us, really)
