Berkeley Sociology majors

Hey,

Who here is going to berkeley this fall as sociology transfers? What are your interests? future career choice? Also what are people doing about the SOCY 5 class?

Yesh! Well it’s broad for me and I’m open-minded but I’d like to travel and help people.

I took a soc research class in the fall of 09 but I wanna re-take it at Berkeley :)

Fellow Soc majors unite!!

Hey what about you OP?

What is weird is that I applied for Sociology, but my essay was written for psychology (I was writing for Davis, my first choice) and I got admitted into C of L&S. Does that mean I am admitted for sociology or does it mean I can pick what I want since my essay was written for Psychology. Cuz, if it means I am supposed to apply for Sociology than heck yeah I am a Sociology major!!

I’m interested in international law and global justice issues i.e. international institutions, international law as an instrument of oppression against third world/indigenous peoples etc. And with that the de-colonial process of oppressed people groups
Also interested in criminal justice issues, racial discrimination in the U.S. etc. and Criminology

I got in as a psych major, but will most likely switch to soc.

Currently, I’m thinking law or becoming a professor.

^ that is legit.

You declare your major when you go to orientation or later if you choose but it’s best to declare right away since there are certain classes you will not be able to get into w/out declaring.
Considering Berkeley has the #1 sociology program in the country (beat out even UOC this past year) I would strongly consider declaring soc as a major.

For the rest of you who already decided to declare soc as a major:

Prof Kelsey- A’s are very attainable in her classes

Prof Huang- A’s are very attainable in his classes, he writes great LOR’s for grad/law school

Prof Burawoy- He is a celebrity professor and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I learned in his classes (all 3 of them), B’s are not difficult in his classes but A’s are. However, he is an amazing professor. He writes amazing LORs & if you get one from him your golden for any employment in soc field since he is very well known.

Prof Rob Willer- young hip professor, very popular on campus (especially w/ the girls) lol… A’s are very attainable in his classes and are very entertaining. Just don’t text or talk while in plain site while he’s lecturing (it’s a huge pet peeve for him)

Best soc class I have ever taken at Berkeley (soc of virtual communities, although it’s not offered every semester)

have fun and welcome to Cal!

thank you kind sir!

@Riley…are u replying to me? … I’m actually a hot female… lol j/k :o)

well apparently I’m a hot male.

And yes of course I was replying to you! That was a very helpful post. <3

lol…it’s all good…i’m sure u will fit right in at Cal :o)

luvtoolearn, do a significant amount of sociology majors aim for law school? i was looking at the placement center website and there was only one person who ended up going :/

Got in for sociology and planning on going to law school after :)
