would it be easier to transfer to stanford from berkeley since they are so close and have great respect for each other's academics? i want to ulimately end up at stanford and i'm trying to figure out the route i need to take to get there. i've heard the two schools, although rivals, have high respect for one another and there are many cross admits between the two schools.

Transferring to Stanford from any school is tough. I don't think it matters much from which college you try to transfer.

Keep in mind, when transferring, universities like to look for compelling reasons to accept the transfer student. For example, if Stanford offers a major that you want to pursue that you can't find at Berkeley (like Petroleum or Aerospace engineering), this would be a more compelling reason, rather than you wanting to transfer just because you think a Stanford degree is more prestigious.

I would try to enjoy Berkeley without obsessing about transferring. It likely will make your first years at Berkeley miserable and even worse if you aren't accepted. Do well at Berkeley and then go to Stanford for grad school.

I agree with all of UCBChemEGrad's points. Stanford transfer admissions looks for students who can take advantage of their opportunities which are not available at the original university. Plus, I believe admit rates were around 5% in recent years, so you shouldn't even think about applying to transfer until you enroll at Berkeley and get a 3.8+ GPA.

Try 1.6%.

Applied: 1,400 / Admitted: 23

Stanford University: Common Data Set 2007-2008

I agree with the above.

If you go to Berkeley so you can transfer into Stanford, you'll be miserable at Berkeley, and more miserable when you get rejected by Stanford again.

If you don't mind me asking, do you go to Duke? Or do you like Duke, but is it that you'd rather goto Berkeley to have a shot at transferring to Stanford?

:

^the latter. right now duke's my top choice.

i thought you didn't get into duke dbd...did you get the decision appealed?
