Every time I hear news about Berkeley for the past year it has been sad. I feel like the university is being dismantled right before my eyes and if I end up going there it will only be a shell of what it once was.

It has always been my dream school, but honestly UCLA looks like the better choice as of late. Especially considering what I have been hearing about the anthropology departments of both schools.

Berkeley itself is not going anywhere, it is the value of the education that is in danger.

It is just a bummer really. The UC system was a world class institution available to the public, and every year it is like waves crashing on the shore dragging a little more of the university away. Talented professors leaving, rankings dropping, and more California residents choosing private or out of state educations.

about f’n time they cut the fat with most of those mollycoddled managers eating from the public trough for way too long. This will improve education at Cal, not hinder it. Now we need to cut the overinflated wages and/or positions of the SEIU being artificially protected. Time to get out the giant broom and clean up the GOP party that went on way too long and nothing was done or properly fixed since 2003! Stick it to em Jerry Brown!

That other thread about UC tuition going up so much in the last 20 years was depressing too.

There are people in California that are philosophically opposed to having such a prestigious public university system and believe it should be de-funded or privatized. Sometimes it feels like they are very slowly winning.

California isn’t on the verge of privatizing the UC system.

The budget cuts are the result of our entire state being $25 billion in the hole. California isn’t going to privatize the UCs anymore than it’s going to eliminate food stamps and children’s health insurance. Every department is getting cuts.

Nearly every CSU and UC has the axe up waiting for students to screw up. Over 25k potential or current students are going to get cut from fall admissions since the schools are breaking at the seams. Even many of the CSU’s have moved to not accepting summer courses for transfers because need a reason to drop the axe on someone. It’s getting more competitive each and every year for those attempting to secure a seat. Truth is not every student deserves or are entitled to a 4 year education. There are other ways and even tradesmen generally earn a better living anyways.

It’s reasonable to assume that budget cuts and lower admission rates are positively correlated, but what is your source for the 25k “potential or current students” who’ll supposedly get the axe as a result of the budget woes?

You play fast and loose with facts around here, as you always have, claiming to have detailed knowledge about all sorts of things – specific campus admissions processes, programs, faculty, et al for every UC and CSU campus out there – when you couldn’t possibly have that information. Wild conjecture is not helpful.

Why, at the age of 41, do you insist on doing this, particularly when you’ve never attended any UC or CSU campus?

Sweet, the liar returns! Missed ya man. #s and %s are available online hence no need to visit every college. Read and inform you rself more mate, ur cooler than many of these cal kids here.
