berkeley traditions

does ucb have an traditions? annual fests/routines, anything like that?

protesting, smoking and growing hash in dorm rooms, ugly people, homeless people, stupidly smart people, stupidly stupid people, being a premed until sophomore year, bad dorm food, good neighborhood food, lots of football spirit, no basketball spirit…what was the question again?

why do you care?

any real responses, please?

annual avoid wearing red during Big Game week plus the Big Bonfire prior to the game? uhmm other than that I can’t think of any traditions. Well I guess there’s the naked run through the library. It’s silent too.

Berkeley has more spirit than 99% of the schools. There are rallies before the games, concerts, lots of students activities, and ensemble music and dance groups. Berkeley makes students feel like they are special because they are Cal students. Cal is the nickname for Berkeley, as it was the first UC.

Some first year students become overwhelmed because of all the fun stuff to join.

Most of the students are pretty good-looking. I don’t know why anyone here would put down Berkeley for looks.

Watch out for the social scene, though. There have been Regents Scholarship students who got caught up in the social scene and wound up out of school and homeless, living in People’s Park.

I do recommend walking through People’s Park to see what can happen to students who put the social scene above their education.

^What was that comment about the Regents’ scholars? Your comments seemed sincere up until there… or is it really true.

That comment about first years becoming overwhelmed is definitely true. :(

^Loche is saying make sure to prioritize between education and social life. :)

…no really now.

what i wanted to hear about is whether or not some Regents actually dropped out.

Of course you find a case like that. People drop out for many reasons. It is not because the work is so hard that it will crush even Regents winners. It is because some people can’t handle the transition to full autonomy when they are living on their own at college. They stop studying, explore new social and personal options to the exclusion of studies, fall into bad situations or addictions.

In any college, the correlation between incoming stats or honors like Regents and success in the college is not absolute. Some who have high GPAs at Cal had relatively lower GPAs in HS. Some who have low GPAs at Cal were valedictorians in HS. Some who have high GPAs at Cal had blah SATs, some who have low GPAs at Cal had perfect SATs. There is some correlation but lots of exceptions and lots of seeming randomness. It is different in college and in some ways the study skills and the keys to high grades are importantly different.

If you are a guy and you select Bowles, practice your singing for the Thursday night serenading.

^hmm? sounds interesting.
