I am a student at a Washington State community College. I want to transfer to Berkeley for Fall 2013 in order to study Computer Science. I have a GPA of 3.85 but I don't know what that will transfer to be at Berkeley. I am member of several clubs at my school and have had an internship. Please give me a general idea if I will be able to get into Berkeley and the Computer Science department. Also, please let me know what I can do to improve my chances and if my work in high school counts in transfer admissions. Thank you.

Are you applying to CS in EECS or in L&S?

I’m not sure. Can I apply to both? I have a lot of language credits but I will also have many math and science credits as well when I transfer. Is Berkeley known for EECS or CS?

You can’t apply to both. You either apply to L&S (CS) or CoE (EECS). L&S is a BA degree, but as for job prospects, it’s kind of equal to EECS. Both are a degree from Berkeley. I’m about in the same boat as you, very similar GPA and I’m applying to EECS.

Basically, if your interested in some humanity courses along with CS, go with L&S. If Physics and engineering interest you more, go with EECS.

Here’s a little information page: [Undergraduate L&S CS Students | EECS at UC Berkeley](CS Major Information | EECS at UC Berkeley)

High school does not count at all. How many credits do you have? You will need at least 60.

Also, your GPA seems high but since you are OOS it’ll be a lot harder to get in. How many comp sci classes have you taken? Even if they don’t transfer to UCB for your degree, it’ll show dedication to your major and having 5+ classes completed (with high grades) will look good.

You have as good as a chance as anyone in California. (UC’s are excepting more out of states for funding in general) probably if your applying with a 3.85 that’s good that’s probably a little above avg I think the avg for that major is 3.8. CRUCIAL you should decide whether your doing computer science L&S or eecs which is electrical engineering computer science which is mainly based on physics and all those math/engineering courses. L&S computer science is more flexible in where you can take humanity courses and diversify your course load rather than the other one and your still taking core computer science classes which is great!
Hmm, your out of state but go on assist.org for reference and choose any California community college (preferably ccsf they have the most courses) and choose the agreements between those two schools. For reference choose the majors as computer science or EECS. You should compare both of them and it’ll give you a general idea on the differences between those two majors and the classes. ( using a new phone sorry if I have any typos)
