I just got an email from UG Admissions at Berkeley asking me to tell them what foreign language I took in high school. I thought this information was irrelevant, as I am a transfer student... I updated my work in progress form with this information but I am freaking out. Is this a bad sign?? It said my admission chances could be jeopardized if I didnt tell them this one thing... AH

i think you are suppose to update your WIP and tell them that.

So all transfer students have to do this then? Because I completely filled out the WIP the first time.

i don't exactly remember if they ask on the WIP form about any foreign language...as i remembered, the only thing is that if you took it in HS, you just need to check that box...don't worry about it...i don't think it's a big problem...

you weren't suppose to update your highschool foreign language req. on the update sheet.did anyone else on this board fill in their foreign lang. on the wip sheet?

for berkeley, they have their own WIP form at myberekeleyapps, and you were supposed to check the box that box if you took foreign language in HS....

I did check that box. Maybe its because I took french 101 this semester and said that I had taken a foreign language in high school. That language was spanish. So maybe theyre just checking to be sure Im not repeating my foreign languages... right?

easymack63, foreign language is a must. We were not asked in the Berkley's WIP. But we had to inform them in the original application. If you did not take it in HS, they expect you to finish in CC.

But I did both. Ok, anyways. I definitely took 3 years of spanish in high school and 2 semesters of french at ccc. I included all this information in all my application documents. So do you think that my admission depends on my foreign languages or something? In your opinion, is this a bad sign for me?

its a graduation must, but it's not an admissions must. i just got off the phone with a uc rep and he told me that as far as transfer admissions are concerned they dont consider foreign language-- but if you plan to graduate you better get it certified by your community college before transfering.

i completed 3 years equivalent of foreign languange, but I only took it for two years because I skipped the first one (spanish 1) and jumped to spanish 2..i finished spanish 3, which was the third year...i checked that 3 years foreign language completion, would it be a big problem? will they ask me to explain why I only took two year and checked 3 years?

I dont know.. I dont even know why they asked me for more information. Maybe theyll ask you. Even if they do, Im hoping it doesnt mean anything and they just need more clarification or something.

easymack63, In that case I am sure you are not in any trouble. Just let Berkeley know about the changes.

ccct, i don't think it is a big thing. But Im not sure if you should let the know now or later if they ask you for the transcripts ?!

I think i'm just worrying too much...hehe...i'll just wait, if they ask i'll explain..i don't think they will revoke my admission if they accept me for this small matter...let's hope not...thanks people...

btw...easymack, wut's your major?

American Studies. You?

intergrated biology...wow, you're only 18 and transfering already...me too! =)

CCIsPrison isn't a foreign language a must for IGETC or essential skills? I thought that they would not let your transfer without it.

On IGETC, for UC, "Proficiency equivalent to two years of high school study in the same language, or at least one semester of college level foreign language course work."

CC_ is not 100% wrong, because some UCs dont require foreign language to tranfer, but the more competitive schools like LA and Cal basically wont let tranfers in without igetc, which can't be certified without foreign language requirements being met.
