Berkeley transfer

I'm sorry, I know these are so annoying, but I was just wondering what you guys think about the possibility of a berkeley transfer:

GPA: 3.41 (but it's a very strong upward trend. I got 2 C's during my first semester at cc, then I got consistent straight A's [one B] after my first semester)
Major: english
Pre-reqs: all completed (except one which I plan to do this summer)
EC: english tutor, work 30 hours a week, member of alpha gamma sigma honor society, interned for the district attorney, volunteer often- habitat for humanity
Strong essays.

Also I don't know if this matters at all, but I've taken a class at Berkeley through concurrent enrollment, and I've gone out of my way to finish my pre-reqs by taking classes at other community colleges in the area

Your case is pretty interesting. I mean the GPA is a bit low for English. I actually used to be an English major. Those were the days when I loved writing (insert exasperated sigh) lol.

Well, ok so you have an upward trend and good EC’s. I’d say you’re a slight reach. For people in your situation (with a slightly lower GPA), you need to stand out in other ways. If your essays are strong, then that’s def good. At this point, you can only hope for the best. I think you’re a solid applicant, but then again, so many are.

I got in to Berkeley as an English major with a 3.43. I don’t know if they will let you do that pre-req over summer though.

@eits25- if you don’t mind, what were your ECs and how was your grade trend?

well to be honest, you’re probably not getting into berkeley with those stats. hopefully you applied to other UC’s because you’d probably get into everything other than berkeley and UCLA

@eits25- was this just last year? and also if you don’t mind me asking, what area of california (assuming you’re from california) are you from?

I’ve actually heard that 3.4 to 3.5 isn’t that unrealistic for berkeley english from multiple people. I don’t know how accurate that is though…

yeah it’s not unrealistic as in there’s bound to be some cases where people with that GPA get in but i don’t think it’s something you can count in happening. i probably shouldn’t have made the post without checking the average GPA for english majors that get in but i’m assuming you’re somewhere below it?

i would say it is a reach but you have a decent shot! good luck!!

Hello, results come out in officially 15 days and I’ve been anything but sane! I just need some peace of mind from opinions about whether or not I will be admitted or not.

Here is my information:
Major: Political Economy
GPA: 3.56 (consider that it’s only from 39 units, i’m taking 21 this semester)
Pre-reqs: Completed all
College: Berkeley City College
Extra-curricular: NGO participation in helping women in Guatemala, volunteer in organization that helps the homeless community in Berkeley, two christian organizations at UC Berkeley, four years in helping children with autism and/or mental retardation, and a lot of other high school participation (i just graduated last year so i figured those activities would still be relevant).
Personal statement: I wrote about my current struggles to receive a better education and how I am determined to meet my goals.

Please give me your feedback! I really would appreciate it.

@ uchrist: I think you have pretty good chances considering how involved you are in the UCB community. Your GPA is solid, and your prereqs are done. If I were an admissions officer, I would only be concerned with the amount of units you are taking this semester…21 is a lot lol. How’s that going for you? I had 18 last semester, and I thought that was quite a bit.

Overall, I would say that you’re in. 70%.

@uchrist, 3.56 is on the low end and 21 units in the spring is a risk. I’m going to have to say that there’s a slight chance you might get in with your ECs. But with that GPA and so many units left in the spring, it’s won’t be a surprise to me if you get rejected.

Hey guys! I havent really done this before but would you also please chance me for UCB. I’ve given up my hopes for UCLA already since the ave admit for Communications is ridiculous (3.93). I dont have any idea on what the ave admit gpa for Media Studies in Berkeley so…please chance me

3.78 GPA
72 units done by end of spring
IGETC and prereqs done
Lots of ECs.
Decent essay - talked about my move from my home country to the US 2 1/2 years ago

so what do you think? I would appreciate your responses!

^nothing’s a done deal, but you’re pretty solid. good luck!

@emilsinclair,
when I tell people that I’m taking twenty-one units, they are pretty shocked - but thankfully, I went to a very competitive and challenging high school which trained me to have high standards for academic work so twenty-one units is do-able. I took fifteen units over the past summer, received one b, and twenty-one units in the fall while receiving three b’s. so, do you think it’s a far stretch?

@uchrist. I’m the same major as you. Took 21 units the semester before last + 3 high school classes (I was still in high school) and it was the fastest semester I ever had. And the classes included Calc, Chem, and Political Science (so not 21 units of PE and Art).

I hope we get in! Only 10 days left.

i took 36 quarter units (equivalent to 24-25 semester units), and it was crazy frustrating! I got an A in the class I thought i was going to do terribly in (econ), and an A- in the class that I thought I had an A+ in. that A- killed my GPA. I got 4 A+'s, one A- and the rest A’s, but still didn’t get a 4.0 because of that stupid “-”

An A- is hardly “killing” a gpa.

sorry for the huge delay I rarely check this site anymore. My grade trend was all over the place. The only EC I had was working an internship for an author and working as a tutor at my JC. I’m from socal to whoever asked. Also, I had four C’s and two W’s on my transcript. Just write good essays.
