Hey,......I'll be attending UCSD this fall and my major is Mech engineering (if i change it will b sum form of engr)......I was rejected by UC Berkeley and UCLA .I wanted to try and and transfer to any of these colleges. My question:

Do EITHER of these colleges have a guranteed transfer policy(like they make me sign a contract stating that if i maintain a certain minimum GPA I can transfer in xyz year) ?(I know both Cal n UCLA offer this to transfers from community college's but is it applicable for students at other UC's too ? )

Don't go into UCSD knowing you want to transfer. It will make your first two years horrible. UCSD is a great school, and in some departments better than UCLA and UCB. It's ranked up there with the top 10 public schools in America.

Get involved in the activities and don't become a disgruntled triton (e.g. the people who didn't get into a school with more prestige), chasing prestige never helped anyone. It's not your school that makes you, it's you that defines you.

With that, there are no guaranteed transfer programs for UC to UC transfers. But if you're meeting people and getting good grades and plan on going to grad school, don't worry about transferring.

Well UCSD comes at a 26 for undergrad engineering so i wasn't too happy, especially since I had worked hard enough and I think done well enough to get into Berkeley(apparently they did not think so)...neways.......i want to transfer coz Berkeley was my dream school for undergrad ...........

"Don't go into UCSD knowing you want to transfer. It will make your first two years horrible"

Thanks for the advice........infact I've been trying to do just that mentally.......I'll remember that............

Also will it be easy for me to get into a really good grad school like Stanford,Caltech,Cornell etc. if i To my undergrad at UCSD?

P.S. school spirit of UCSD i've heard is virtually non-existent,Atmosphere is great at Berkeley,Cal will be more challenging and will push me to my limits, engineering at Cal is way better...........

you said that cal and ucla have transfer guarntee contract with community colleges. but i said i don't think Cal has that transfer guarantee contract with CC

Ok.......a lot of thanKs everybody for their replies n info......just 1 more thing.....
1) Will I be able to transfer ONLY in the 3rd year ?
2)since nether Cal nor UCLA have TAG/TAP then what would be the kind of GPA i will haveto maintain to have a very good chance at transferring?
3) Also I guess I will have to have a lot of good EC's rite?

UC-to-UC transfers are considerably more difficult than CC-to-UC transfers. As a result, you're going to want to have as close to a 4.0 as possbile -- especially if you want a shot at Berkeley's College of Engineering.

1) you can transfer whenever the hell you want...but minimum 60 semester units are required...plus some other requirements...writing, math etc.

2) For Engineering at UCLA I would say 3.7+. For Cal, depends on major...if it's EECS 3.8+ other maybe 3.7+ Im not sure....but you are UC to UC so the GPA would probably be much higher.

3) Not necessarily...what's important is GPA, Pre-reqs, Personal Statement...ECs are the last thing...it doesn't hurt to have some...but it won't help you if you GPA is ****

60 semesters units or 90 quarter units plus are required but since you are in transferring from UCSD, you can not pass the 120 quarter units before you transfer.

For UCLA engineering, 3.8 GPA is about average (you can confirm this on the UCLA admitted students profile) so keep at least a 3.7+ or above but below 3.7 GPA is not the end of the world, you still have chance because GPA is just one factor out of many!

For Berkeley, I would say the same thing: keep a 3.7+ GPA or above, of course the higher the GPA is, the better but I know that math/physics/chem are tough as hell so 3.7+ is very good indeed.

OK.......its gr8 reading all ur advise......also doesn't 60 semester units take about 2 years to complete?(especially if I'm not going to take too many courses at a time to maintain a high GPA?).......is there absolutely no exception through which I could transfer to Cal or UCLA after the 1st year since its gonna be highly unlikely that I'm gonna finish 60 semester units in one year itself........
