I was poking around CalNet, and happened across this:

Award Details (2010 - 2011)
.................................................. Amount ...........Status
GIFT AID
Federal SEOG Grant .........................500.00 .............confirmed
Federal Pell Grant ...........................5,550.00 ...........confirmed
Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship...12,052.00 ..........confirmed
Gift Aid Total $ 18,102.00

Does this really mean Berkeley is giving me a 12k scholarship? They didn't contact me about it...

Also, is this in lieu of or in addition to normal financial aid? I didn't need financial aid for CC (I'm a transfer) so I'm not sure what that would be listed under or how that works. All I know is I filed a FAFSA.

Looks like it, but you might check the details and it may be different the next year. Could be a blue & gold award? Are you Cal Grant qualified? They often do this in year one of Cal Grant B recipients, but if you are a transfer I don’t know how that works. Are you a non-CA resident? If you are a CAL resident and qualify for a full Pell you should qualify for a Cal Grant

Smarty, I don’t know about Berkeley, but at UMich if you can see numbers like that posted but haven’t yet been told it means they’re still adding different sources to the package. Once they’re all finished, they should create an award notice and email you to go download it. So you may at the moment be seeing a partial picture. And yes, sure looks like you’ve received and undergrad scholarship.

Probably Blue and Gold which gives an automatic grant if you’re low income.

@somemom–I’m a california resident, efc of 0 from FAFSA. I filed FAFSA late, though, so that might make me ineligible for some stuff.
@kmccrindle–yeah, I did some more research and that’s basically what they said about it.

OMG, though, I’m so effin estatic!

It says scholarship, though. I’m almost 100% certain that’s not Blue&Gold. If I recall correctly, it shows up as “UC Fee Grant” or something like that. Looks to be just a very generous amount of money given to the OP. Maybe they had the scholarship money to give and the OP’s stats met the requirements thus saving campus grant money for other low EFC students who may not have been as desirable?

OP: I would concur that submitting the FAFSA late would make you ineligible for Cal Grant (at least that’s the way I read the requirements).

However, there’s more to receiving Cal Grant than being a California resident (and EFC doesn’t matter since Cal Grant financial eligibility is based on income ceilings and asset ceilings). You must also have graduated from a California High School as a California resident (which I’m guessing you probably did and the late FAFSA probably caused the issue).

Congrats on the awesome scholarship :)
