Who's more prestigious?

Well I don't like cornell but seroiusly what do you think?

Many would say Ivy> UCB

But Cornell, Penn, Brown...I think UCB can beat

^ I agree. Berkeley also has the taller clock tower. ;)

and less ice on the ground throughout the year

how come you’re not posting on your other account?

well cornell is one of the lowest ivies when it comes to prestige, so hiring might go to the more prestigious ones. whereas berkeley is the best in the west (well, other than stanford)

I would say that Cornell is more prestigious just because one has to get through a more difficult admissions process to go there. But that’s not nearly enough of a reason to go there over Berkeley.

**I don’t think Cornell is harder to get into than Berkeley. **Cornell’s admissions are somewhat predictable. If you have great stats, you’re already almost in at Cornell. OTOH, I see many students with near perfect stats but didn’t get in at Berkeley. Berkeley’s admissions process is holistic that’s why you often see students with 2250+ SATs turned down.

OP, I don’t know what you mean by “more prestigious”. But if you mean it as “more respected and well-known”, then Berkeley is it. And, that is specially true in all countries other than the USA. Berkeley is specially quite a respected brand name in Europe. Most Europeans equate it to Stanford, Yale, MIT and Princeton.

“you often see students with 2250+ SATs turned down.”

??? That’s news to me. At my high school, Berkeley is the place where people with good stats and mediocre EC’s (like me) go. People with strong extracurriculars go to private schools.

then search the archives for decision day each year, when everyone posts their stats and outcomes. There are some VERY surprising decisions. Most make sense - high stats get more yes that no, lower stats there are more no than yes, but the exceptions are crazy.

Who cares? Stop with the prestige whoring you prestige whores.

You’re undergrads, no one cares if you go to UC Berkeley or Chico, the material taught in Chem 3A is the same as their organic chem class.

Orly? Most of my high school friends who have great stats (2300/800 SAT IIs/4.0 UW) with random EC activities got rejected from Cornell. Half of them are are Regents Scholars. Also, a lot of the freshmen I met wanted to go to Cornell. Ofc they were rejected even though they had great stats, which is why they’re attending Cal. And if you think that most Cal students could have gotten into Cornell when applying to undergrad universities, I think you’re mistaken.

To add my input regarding prestige…every top-tier school is prestigious in its own way. To say Yale is more prestigious than Berkeley is not exactly correct. But overall, I think it’s safe to say Yale (undergrad) is more prestigious than Berkeley (undergrad). I’d say the same for Cornell (overall).

Hey people. There are students who got rejected at Cornell but not at Berkeley. Similarly, there are students who got rejected at Berkeley but not at Cornell. I did not say Berkeley is harder to get into than Cornell. I said, Berkeley’s admissions are unpredictable whilst Cornell’s is. And, yes, I do know a lot of students with perfect-to-near-perfect stats that were turned down at Berkeley out-rightly. Such students aren’t hard to find. They exist on this message board, as well as, on FB. They’re usually the ones who bicker, whine and gloat, and later, bash the school for not accepting them. Again, find them on FB. They are so many of them there.

Anyways, here are the stats for both schools:

Admit Rate:
18% - Cornell
21% - Berkeley

% in the top 10:
99% - Berkeley
89% - Cornell

Berkeley SATs:
Reading: 620-740
Math: 660-770
Writing: 650-750

Cornell SATs:
Reading: 630-740
Math: 670-770

PERCENT OF ENROLLING STUDENTS SUBMITTING SAT SCORES:**
Berkeley - 99%
Cornell - 87.8%

Again, the data show that Cornell isn’t harder to get into than Berkeley. They are both very selective schools to get into and neither is harder (to get into) than the other

I didn’t know anyone took the little Ivies seriously. I certainly don’t.

Well I bet most people in Berkeley would have gotten into Cornell if they only applied.

I got into cornell myself. Cornell is easy to get into.

I don’t think Cornell is more prestigious than Berkeley. Maybe if you are from Ithaca, you may think that way. You do know they are considered safety school, right? Of course one might suggest Berk is a safety too.

Berkeley. I couldn’t handle the cold northern weather.

Then again, born and raised Californian here.

If you’re from California, it makes sense to go to Berkeley. Otherwise, you’re paying for a state school at private school prices ($50,000 a year!). An Ivy is likelier to have a huge endowment, which can be beneficial in many different ways for students. Meanwhile, with the economy floundering in California, the UCs have to take their lumps just like every other part of the government. Also, Cornell is stunning, while Berkeley’s campus is okay. However, if you hate snow, then by all means, Berkeley is going to be more satisfying. Both good choices, but I just can’t see paying $50,000 for ANY state school.

OOS tuition is $34k/year. The $50k figure is an inflated budgetary number.

UCBCHemGrad, I still think $34,000 is too much for Berkeley or Cornell.

I would not go to either of them if I had to pay that much times 4 years.

Actually, I wouldn’t even attend either of them if I had to pay over 10k a year. But, that’s just me.

And, you’d pay 50k/yr for Cornell???

Cornell is a better school for everything.
