I am currently a senior who is trying to decide between Berkeley and NYU.

I intend to major in something business related (either finance, management, or international business). I have already been accepted into Stern and for Berkeley I would apply to Haas in my sophomore year. For Berkeley, I am worried that I will not be admitted into Haas. Cost is not a huge issue for me although I am aware the NYU will be a great deal more expensive.

Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions on which is better? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Any particular reason why?

If you live in CA, Berkeley. Although Stern might be slightly better, you’re paying 40,000 less per year to go to Haas, which is still a GREAT school of business.

But it also depends on which environment you want.

I do live in CA so yes the cost thing is definitely true. The problem for Berkeley though is that I am worried I will not be admitted into Haas. If that happens then I will be in some trouble.

Also, is Haas better or Stern? I think i’ve seen lists that rank both ways.

I’m pretty sure that both are high up there.

If you aren’t admitted into Haas, you could always transfer to Stern. How competitive is it to get into Haas?

tranferring to Stern is nearly impossible. the retention rate is very high. i’ve seen kids transferring with 4.0s from OTHER NYU SCHOOLS get turned down.

definitely stern, although berkley has a better ranking, stern is close behind and haas only offers a bs in business admin with out a concentration and stern offers a bs in accounting, actuarial science, economics, finance, business administration, marketing, information systems and international business (but only as a co-major), also i’m pretty sure stern has more connections for when you look for a job/internship (especially in wall st.)

but seeing that you live in ca, berkley seems a lot cheaper, both schools are good and neither is bad choice, gl

Thank you so much olaf. I actually did not notice that Berkeley only offers a bs in business admin… oops. That will probably influence my decision quite a bit.

And radio rabbit, i think Haas has an admit rate of about 50% but since all Berkeley students work really hard, it probably is pretty competitive.

I would go with Berkeley because you’re in-state.

If you’re going into business, I’d have to say stern. You’re in NYC and you’re near Wall Street (though they’re definately not doing so good right now). Berkeley is no doubt a fantastic university, but for the major you want, I’d say Stern.

I’ve posted on a few threads regarding this matter, as I was in a similar situation a year ago. Berkeley and NYU are different schools with different structures and different cultures. Have you visited both?

In the end, it really comes down to the type of person you are. How independent are you? How intent are you upon studying business vs, economics (if for some terrible reason you do not get into Haas)? How much are you interested in city life? Etc.

I can answer any questions, both specific and general regarding NYU Stern student life. I did have the opportunity to meet several Haas students when I went to visit Berkeley through Regents, but I’m not sure I could be as helpful on that end.

Private message me, if you’d like.

Thanks so much for all the help, I think I will probably end up going to NYU. I have not yet visited the campus but I plan to do so during spring break.
