Berkeley vs Brown?

Your thoughts?

If your major happens to be Business or EECS (or other engineering disciplines), Berkeley. Else, Brown.

^ I agree 101 percent, especially for computer science where Berkeley is quite renown for.

How about psychology/sociology? Isn’t Berkeley pretty great for psych?

^ I think so. But for undergrad social sciences and humanities, there are a lot of options that you choose from, unlike in engineering, business and computer science where Berkeley is consistently ranked top 2 or top 3 in the whole nation.

Brown is ranked a couple of spots higher than Berkeley. Berkeley is cheaper than Brown. In terms of prestige, they are about the same except for the fact that Brown is Ivy league (or is it not?). I say choose Brown-- although I love saying 'I go the number one public school in the country"

in addition, I know quite a few people who have gotten into Brown and rejected from Cal. Food for thought, perhaps?

I know more way more people getting into Cal but not Brown. And I know that happens much more often. Engineer/Business otherwise Brown. And get a siggy/picture from/with Alicia Sacramone and pic it on here. =)

Emma Watson goes to Brown. This should be the easiest decision in the world.

If you’re a humanities type of person, then Brown. You’ll enjoy the open curriculum.

thanks for all the replies  And, for the record brown and berkeley = about the same price, despite the fact I live in California. Top colleges give freaking ridiculous fin aid packages for poor people like myself.

You should definitely visit Brown first. I ended up choosing Berkeley over Brown and one of the major factors was the fact that when I visited Brown over the summer, it rained as I had never seen it rain before. I prefer California weather.

How do you know your financial aid packages from Brown/Berkeley already?

I don’t. It’s just that my family makes under 60k a year, and Brown (as with a lot of other schools) says it’s basically a free ride if you fall into that category.

My daughter is at Berkeley and absolutely loves it!

Go to brown. Berkeley FA in the next couple of year might kill ya :S

This list of “awesome majors” is too small. The math department at Berkeley is world famous and tops the national caliber in several areas. It is unique in its breadth and depth of strength.

Brown is a very good school, and scholars of the highest order come out of it. If you like a very specific major at Berkeley, you’re probably better off going with your gut there, but Brown is on average unbeatable in terms of flexibility and the happiness of the student body reflects this. I know graduate students here who did undergraduate study at Brown and seemed to love it.

Your call, really.

Brown seems pretty chill, go there.

I agree. Berkeley is actually much better in just about every academic field than people think it would be. Check out: [University of california berkeley | Top Universities](http://www.topuniversities.com/university/84/university-of-california--berkeley)

But yes, Brown seems more like a school that would be nice for someone interested in humanities, especially because of its open curriculum, though I think you should try and arrange a visit there if possible. Personally, I was somewhat put off by the atmosphere there so I decided not to apply.

I have the same dilemma. Brown is #1 for me right now (haven’t gotten in yet, so this is all hypothetical) and Berkeley is #1A. Honestly you can’t compare them. They are two completely different places. East coast vs West coast, public v private, huge v. small, no curriculum v. curriculum.

My choice honestly might come down to the fact that California has better weather than Rhode Island. I know it’s sad but I kind of hope to get denied from Brown so there won’t be a tough decision like this. I hate to sound conceited but yeah.

I’m in the same boat - Brown is my hypothetical #1 (I will know by next week) and I actually didn’t think I was going to get into Cal, but now that I’m in I’d have to say it’s a close runner up to Brown.

I’ve spent 2 summers at Brown and LOVED it. But New England winters are awful (I live in Massachusetts, so I would know haha). Going to California would be an amazing experience in this regard.

Centermid put this in a good light - there are many crucial differences between Berkeley and Brown. I still have to visit Cal, but from what I hear, the schools have a generally similar atmosphere which is interesting to note.
